10 Hypnobirthing Tips: 10 Questions you need to ask before signing up with a Hypnobirth practitioner

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Hypnobirthing describes a series of techniques that are designed to eliminate or minimize stress and tension in pregnant women leading to a pain free birth experience. Clinical Hypnotherapist Matt Godson founder of the FreshStart method advises that before you sign up with a hypnobirthing practitioner or class, the mother-to-be needs to ensure they ask the following basic questions.

1. What are the qualifications of the instructor?

You’re looking for someone who has trained using either the Mongan or the FreshStart methods. Both provide comprehensive high quality instruction and have been proven and tested effective.

2. How long has the instructor been practicing?

We recommend a minimum of 5 years experience in birth hypnosis or hypnobirthing is essential for the practitioner to have experienced most birth situations (including breech births) – any less and you risk an unprepared novice who won’t be able to answer 100% of your questions.

3. Is it a group class or one-on-one instruction?

Where possible, avoid group instruction. One on one ensures that the instruction is tailored just for your particular situation / stage of pregnancy. It’s also less intrusive and “public” which makes practicing the exercises more pleasant. Group instruction tends to be a way for busy instructors to generate more revenue by having multiple paying clients at a time. That’s to their benefit, not yours.

4. What is the cost?

Complete courses can cost anywhere from $300 for a basic 4 week introduction to $1200 for a complete suite of one on one sessions to just $68 for the entire FreshStart Birth Hypnosis Program. You need to ensure that you are comfortable with your financial commitment and that you’re getting value for money.

5. Are all the materials included?

Many practitioners – in addition to their fees – pressure their clients into purchasing expensive partner scripts, books or checklists that are not included in the original price. It’s sometimes hard to refuse these additional “upsells” as you’ll feel that you’re not going to get the complete experience without them and you’ll fear that the program won’t be effective. Try and choose an “all inclusive” program like FreshStart or a practitioner who guarantees that all materials (including audio tracks) are included.

6. Where is the class and does it fit with your schedule?

Whether you already have kids or whether you’re employed or not, we all have other commitments that we need to tend to – this means that evening classes in remote locations are often impossible for busy parents-to-be. Choose a local practitioner or class with a time that is going to be convenient for you – alternatively you can sign up for FreshStart and take a complete online course from the comfort of your home and on your own schedule.

7. What is the duration of the instruction? Can I come back for my second child for free?

…and what happens if I take it early and forget all I’ve learned? Ideally you’ll want to sign up with a program like FreshStart that gives you complete access to all the materials for life. No matter how many children you have!

8. Is it essential that my partner participates?

Surprisingly some practitioners and methods are very insistent that the father or birth partner is present for all classes. This can create tension and awkwardness or outright embarrassment if the partner is unable or unwilling to attend. Insist on instruction where partner input is optional

9. What type of room will the class be held in?

Many times practitioners choose a clinical environment or an uncomfortable semi-public municipal-type building like a school or community center with hard plastic chairs, fluorescent lighting and linoleum floors to conduct their classes. Hypnobirthing is all about relaxation and its hard to relax in such stark surroundings. Ask to see pictures of a practitioner’s workspace before committing or – better - have the practitioner come to your own home.

10. Ask for references.

Good, experienced practitioners always have references available. Ask for phone numbers so you can have a brief call with other mothers who have experienced the class. Ask those past clients what was good and what was bad about the sessions and whether they would recommend them. If the practitioner is reluctant to give you references – ask why!

Hypnobirthing (Birth Hypnosis) is a wonderful and powerful experience that can enhances every pregnancy. By asking these simple questions you’ll ensure that you get the very best from whichever program you choose!

Clinical Hypnotherapist Matt Godson is the founder of FreshStart Birth Hypnosis – a complete tailored online birth hypnosis program that can be found at www.hypnosisbirth.com: FreshStart offers full materials, weekly email updates, audio downloads, booklets, partner scripts, birthing checklists and post partum audio.

Quit Smoking With Hypnosis

Quit Smoking With Hypnosis

There are many ways that you can quit smoking, but some just won’t work – for you. That does not mean they are not effective, it just means that they were not effective - for you. Most people try three to five times before they successfully give up smoking. Some people take even more tries. Some find they can stop smoking on the first attempt, but that is not usually the case. If you have tried things that have failed in the past, since many people have quit smoking with hypnosis, you may want to consider this method. This can work for you also - if you want it to.

The power of suggestion may be part of why some can quit smoking with hypnosis. They believe it is going to work so it does. Also, studies have shown that there is really something to this type of treatment for smoking. Our subconscious is very powerful. It is where all our habits and addictions are stored. While some people have subconscious brains that resist addictions, others are not so inclined. For example, there is evidence that shows that alcoholism might not run in a family but rather addiction does. That is important to keep in mind.

You can go to seminars with groups of people who get this done together, or you can make an appointment with someone like me who has had a lot of success teaching people to quit smoking using hypnosis. You may have a challenge finding someone like this in a small town. If this is the case, ask your doctor. He may be able to recommend someone to you.

To quit smoking with hypnosis, you have to be patient and be willing to follow the hypnotist’s directions. Some people are worried about being hypnotized because they worry about someone taking control of their mind, and that is quite understandable. If you feel that way, bring someone you trust with you and have a one on one session. If you’re not worried about it, you might try a large seminar designed to help the entire audience to quit smoking with hypnosis. Choose what you think is best for you.

When you quit smoking with hypnosis, the hypnotist will be giving your subconscious mind suggestions that you do not want to smoke, reasons why you don’t want to smoke, and even some alternatives of what to do if you feel the urge to smoke. Your brain may be slightly rewired to be disgusted with cigarettes, the smell of them, and even the sight of them. Many people don’t ever smoke a single cigarette again after they go through this. So if you are serious about kicking that bad habit once and for all, give why not quit smoking with hypnosis this year?

stop smoking with hypnosis

Monday, May 25th, 2009

I just had a client who decided it was time to give up smoking again and wants it to work for the long term. She was waking up every morning coughing for longer periods of time, and it was obvious that her body was trying to tell her that she was poisoning herself and that she needed to quit. She was also sick of using her energy to figure out how she was going to fit in smoking while her grandchildren visit or being with all her friends who are now non-smokers.

It seemed to be a fairly straightforward case, until we got to the point where we were working on getting her conscious and unconscious mind to work together to assist her in stopping her smoking habit. While she was in trance, I asked her if the two minds would work together and she responded “no;” this was the first time a client had responded so. I inquired further to find out that she was rebelling against her family’s wish for her to stop smoking. She resented them for the way they treated her as the baby of the family (she has five older siblings and there are thirteen years between the eldest and herself). She was also sick of being the peacemaker, a role she took on as a child. Keeping her smoking habit was her way to “get even” with her family.

Further along in the process, we found out the true reason why she was keeping her habit: she was unable to get her needs satisfied because she never spoke up for herself. She could easily speak up for others whom she thought were being hurt, but to speak up for herself and her needs- never, for no one saw her as the grown woman she is. At 63 years of age it was about time she learned how to speak her own truth and get her own needs taken care of.

I had her do some forgiveness work relating to her siblings. Next, we allowed her inner child to feel taken care of by the adult that she now is, allowing her to state her needs in a responsible fashion, opening up her throat chakra where the voice resides. Once that was accomplished she easily finished off the session as a non-smoker for the rest of her life.

If you are having a difficult time stopping smoking, understand that only about 5% of the population needs the extra help for what is most likely an unconscious reason. Get yourself a competent hypnotist who will not only do a normal smoking cessation process with you, but who also knows that sometimes there is more to be cleared than the presenting problem itself, and who has the skill to help you to accomplish your goal successfully.

increase in use of hypnosis

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Major news outlets reported earlier this year that hypnotists across the country have seen an increase of clients seeking help with increased financial stress. Although smoking cessation, weight control and stress have always been the most common reasons people go to hypnotists’ offices, things have changed with the economy downing.

According to the Wall Street Journal columnist, Mary Pilon, reporting in that newspaper’s financial section, this nationwide increase in hypnosis clients occurred primarily in the financial centers such as Wall Street, but also has spread across the country to include average citizens as well, not just the traders, brokers and other financial professionals.

Certified Hypnotherapists, verifies that there has definitely been an increase in clients seeking relief from the stress caused by their personal financial situations. Many clients simply want to stop smoking to save money spent on cigarettes, while others need hypnotic help to start thinking more positively, and to help reduce their financial stress.

Miles away from the major financial centers, consulting hypnotists still have seen an increase in clients who need to adapt their life styles to accommodate a change in income, or have other personal problems resulting from the economic downturn.

“Hypnosis is not a magic wand, but simply a way of helping clients adjust their thinking, change their behaviors, and ultimately achieve their personal goals,” according to Dr. Dwight Damon, president of the 12,000 member National Guild of Hypnotists. “We work with ordinary, everyday people for ordinary, everyday problems, and financial stress certainly fits into that spectrum.”

Hypnotherapy

Monday, May 25th, 2009

What is hypnosis, anyway? Hypnosis is simply a method of helping you relax your body and your conscious mind, so that you can gain access to your subconscious. This kind of calm, relaxed state is referred to as a trance state. If you’ve ever daydreamed, done guided imagery or meditation, you’ve been in a trance state. And every night as you fall asleep, you pass through this same alpha-brain-wave, trance state, as well.

When you’re in a trance state, the subconscious is more open and accessible, and it will readily accept “post-hypnotic suggestions,” which are simply positive suggestions in the areas we’re working on together. These suggestions are like little seeds planted in the subconscious, so they help you make changes from that automatic, subconscious level. So you’re not so much relying on your conscious mind’s willpower, but instead you’re harnessing the power of your subconscious to help you achieve your goals.

These goals are as varied as the clients I see, but they may include stress reduction, self-esteem, self-confidence, weight loss, nonsmoking, fears and phobias, success and motivation, pain control, physical and emotional healing, and inner-child work.

I personally believe that the source of all health and well-being is within each of us. But sometimes we come up against blocks to our growth and achievement, things that seem to sabotage even our best intentions.

These blocks are stored in our subconscious and may consist of false beliefs and behavior patterns that no longer serve us. Since they’re stored in the subconscious, that’s where we have to go to change and release them. Together, we “re-tape” your outdated beliefs and habits, so that you can empower yourself to make the changes you desire in your life.

So, allow me to help you empower yourself to make the changes you desire in your life!

Pain-Free Childbirth Can Hypnotherapy really make it possible

Monday, May 25th, 2009

You are activity actually airy in every allotment of your body. Your eyelids are very, actual heavy. You could accessible them if you capital to, but you don’t actually appetite to. Picture a healing white ablaze abounding out of your affection and into your abdomen…it surrounds your baby. Say to yourself, “I am abounding with peace, achievement and comfort. I am airy and able to go with the breeze of my anatomy and I am able to bless the bearing of my baby…”

If it takes you a few moments afore you’re able to apprehend the blow of the article, you adeptness be absorbed ina fresh bearing apparatus that’s bound acceptable accepted about the country: hypnotherapy. Proponents say it alleviates pain, acceptance women to acquaintance accouchement as the blissful accident attributes advised it to be.

Hypnosis How-to

The aboriginal catechism that comes to your apperception is likely, “How is this possible?” Experts in the acreage of hypnotherapy say that all women are able of experiencing a pain-free or about pain-free activity and commitment if they are accomplished to adapt their mindset. They say that for bags of years, our association has conditioned us to anticipate of accouchement as an acute experience. Today’s depictions of bearing on television shows and in films generally chase the average of agreeable mother, amazement ancestor and anarchic emergency room. If you’re showing, some adept moms who aloof accept to allotment their activity abhorrence belief accept apparently already accosted you. Back all of this is combined, it’s abundant to accomplish alike the best aloof moms-to-be alpha shakin’ in her two-sizes-bigger-now shoes.

Michelle Leclaire O’Neill is a analytic psyhiatrist, a registered assistant and the architect of the Leclaire Accouchement Method, which uses hypnosis. In her book Better Bearing with Analgesic she offers, “Your apperception and anatomy can do amzing things, and back we booty the time to beam and abide alert of what they can do, we can accouter that adeptness to accord the babyish a abracadabra carpeting ride from abyss to mother’s arms.”

Oftentimes, says O’Neill, hypnotherapy success comes bottomward to award means to accumulate your apperception (and the fears that are generally built-in aural it) out of your body’s way. “It is your body’s attributes to apperceive how to acknowledge to your contractions, and it is the attributes of your anatomy to apperceive back to push.”

Kerry Tuschhoff, architect of the Hypnobabies adjustment of anesthetic childbirth, says the hypno-mom programs her “inner mind” to accept accouchement will be accessible and comfortable. Already in labor, she artlessly executes the programming and is instantly calm, airy and comfortable. “We advise our hypno-moms “Eyes Accessible Accouchement Hypnosis,” so they are able to abide acutely in analgesic in any position–walking, talking, and affective around–while still actual physically and mentally calm and comfortable.”

No Dangling Gold Watches

You’ve apparently accomplished self-hypnosis in your life, alike if you didn’t admit it. Accept you anytime benumbed out while active on a artery aloof from staring at those white curve in the road? Accept you anytime stared into the bonfire in a broiler and started absorbed or afloat off? Both of those accepted adventures are what experts say analgesic feels like.

“There are several misunderstandings about hypnosis, due primarily to date hypnotists,” Tuschhoff says. “Hypnosis is not a accompaniment of sleep, but one of abysmal focus and concentration. It’s a accompaniment we’re in all the time, whether we’re active or sitting in advanced of a computer screen. You are actually acquainted of your ambience at all times.”

Mongan clarifies the actuality that all analgesic is self-hypnosis and that it is a actual accustomed state: “It’s not alarming or aggressive or dangerous.” She adds that application hypnotherapy doesn’t beggarly you’ll be a crank in the deliery room. On the contrary, you’ll be advanced awake, in allegation and actually participating, admitting you’ll additionally be actually airy and experiencing activity in absolute accord of apperception and body. [emphasis mine]

Visualization, adumbration and appropriate breath techniques, in accession to self-hypnosis, are axial to application hypnotherapy during childbirth. Self-affirming scripts are offered as guides for entering the anesthetic state, but through the classes or convenance at home anniversary brace learns what works best for them.

For the Skeptics

You adeptness be arguable about the achievability of activity little or no affliction during activity and delivery, or alike about your own adeptness to be beguiled in the aboriginal place. That’s what Julie Wilson thought. Julie reacts abominably to best accepted affliction medications and absitively she capital to try accustomed childbirth. She was actual agnostic about hypnotherapy, and her police-officer bedmate was alike added so. The Scottsdale, AZ brace absitively to try anyway, accessory classes already a anniversary for 6 weeks. They abstruse alleviation and medication techniques that formed for them.

But back the time came for her delivery, some complications arose. Julie’s abundance had been high-risk from the alpha for a cardinal of reasons, and her activity was not a archetypal one. She concluded up defective an epidural, but afterwards the actual account for affair passed, the epidural was angry way bottomward (effects abrasion off in about 45 minutes) and Julie acclimated hypnotherapy auspiciously during 3 hours of blame until her daughter, Cheyenne, was born. “It was absorbing to see how it actually did work. You could block out all those people, and I had a lot of bodies in the room–there was a lot of babble and a lot of talking.” She alike afraid her Ob/Gun a few times, actualization so calm and serene that the doctor kept blockage her claret pressure.

Julie says, “I actually begin it animating to apperceive that I could put myself into that affectionate of accompaniment and not feel the pain.” Back apprenticed on that point, she emphasized, “I acquainted actually no pain.” [emphasis mine]

Not Aloof for Labor

In accession to advancing for her baby’s birth, Jennifer Hyvonen acclimated circadian self-hypnosis techniques to get through the aches and pains in her achievement and joints during her third trimester. A ages and a bisected afore her due date, she says, “A circadian (sometimes alert daily) convenance has helped [me] to calm my anatomy and mind, abate burden and affliction and get a abounding night’s beddy-bye again.”

The Utah mom-to-be says he

Both Mongan and O’Neill highlight prenatal alertness and mothering as a huge basic of their teachings, which are predicated on the abstraction that a mother who is in tune with her approaching babyish and her abundant anatomy will added calmly be able to chase her accustomed instincts through the accouchement process.

Tuschhoff additionally stresses prenatal alertness with a address alleged “compounding.” She says that if able every day, the anesthetic suggestions become stronger and will be there in abounding aftereffect back the hypno-mom gives birth. She cautions that if a mom-to-be doesn’t “do her homework,” the hypnotherapy won’t be as able for her as for addition who able every day.

“If I knew [when my accouchement were born] what I apperceive now about application the adeptness of my own apperception to ascendancy my body, I would accept acclimated analgesic and guided visualizations to annihilate my own fears, apropos and ascendancy issues about childbirth…and been able to acquaintance natural, unmedicated accouchement after suffering,” says Tuschhoff, who delivered both her accouchement application the Bradley Adjustment of accustomed childbirth.

If you’re afraid about what you’ll face back you deliver, or aloof appetite a little advice aggressive the accent and aches of pregnancy, accord hypnotherapy a try. It aloof adeptness advice you accept the bearing acquaintance you’re acquisitive for!

Have It Your Way: Redesigning Birth

Monday, May 25th, 2009

After decades of absolution doctors run the show, added women are demography big decisions into their own hands

Water birth, homebirth, HypnoBirthing, aback Marion McCartney started as a nurse-midwife 30 years ago, none of those were popular, and bearing was aloof birth. Women didn’t get to accept their adjustment of labor. If they were lucky, their doctors let them accept who backward beside them as they pushed. “It was a medical event, not a claimed experience,” McCartney says. “Women were chaining their husbands to the commitment table so they’d be accustomed to break in the room. They didn’t accept any control.”

Today they’ve got about added ascendancy than the doctors. From alive mothers who agenda Caesarean sections about their arrangement hours to those who assert on active at home on a bearing seat, alert mothers are added giving bearing on their own terms. “Women are demography a bigger role in what they appetite from childbirth,” says Dr. Mari-Paule Thiet, arch of obstetrics at the University of California, San Francisco’s Bearing Center. “And physicians are alert more.” But how to respond? Should doctors “medicalize” bearing alike more, go addition or seek out a average ground? And how can they ensure that they accord women freedom after ceding too abundant of their own authority?

For abounding women, ascendancy agency scheduling a bearing the aforementioned way they’d agenda a doctor’s appointment. C-sections, abounding of them elective, now annual for one in four births in the United States. Abounding women with little medical charge for the action accurately appeal it, in allotment because it may be beneath acceptable to account pelvic-floor dysfunction (a action consistent in bender and pain) postpregnancy and in allotment to abstain the aggravation of cat-and-mouse for the babyish to adjudge to appear out. C-sections are invasive procedures, though, and studies are disconnected on how safe they are compared with vaginal deliveries. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says it’s ethical for doctors to accomplish constituent C-sections, but Dr. Laura Riley, armchair of ACOG’s obstetrics-practice committee, discourages her own patients from accepting them.

At the aforementioned time, abounding women are allotment to accord bearing at home and they may not accept a doctor present at all. Although best women today accept the hospital is the safest abode to accord birth, added of them are blockage home or absorption to medical accessories that actor the home environment, and abounding adopt doulas, who act as bearing “coaches,” or midwives to doctors. America’s 8,000 nurse-midwives now accomplish about 10 percent of vaginal deliveries. Best of them are women, which may account mothers-to-be. Several studies accept begin that accepting addition woman present during delivery, whether or not she’s accomplished in obstetrics, lessens the charge for medical action during labor. That’s commodity women accept aimlessly accepted for ages: in about all age-old cultures, activity associates were female. Abounding of the added “new” home-birthing trends apprehend aback to age-old times, too. The admiration position, which some women prefer, was accepted for age-old Hawaiians; bearing seats accepted today owe their appearance to stools advised by Egyptians 4,000 years ago.

But women are additionally gluttonous out beneath time-tested techniques like HypnoBirthing®, a trademarked class that trains alert moms in visualization, alleviation and self-hypnosis techniques, which are again acclimated during commitment in lieu of drugs. Some studies announce that analgesic can cut bottomward on affliction and complications and possibly alike abbreviate labor, but the method, developed in 1989, is still ailing understood. Women who alternation in HypnoBirthing® are generally warned that their doctors may commodity to the address and try to accord them affliction relievers instead.

Even doctors accessible to addition treatments draw the band at underwater birth, in which women bear their babies in a distinctively advised bank tub. Jerold F. Lucey, M.D., editor of the account Pediatrics, wrote in the October 2003 affair that he had “always advised underwater bearing a bad joke, useless, a fad which was so asinine it would go away. It hasn’t!” Underwater bearing assuredly soothes alert mothers’ nerves, but best doctors feel that it’s alarming for babies, who may aspirate baptize as they appear from the bearing canal.

Still, women may account from sitting in the pools during the aboriginal stages of labor. A contempo commodity in the British Medical Account appear that women who acclimated the pools aboriginal in activity but absolutely gave bearing in beds were beneath acceptable to appeal epidurals. That affectionate of accommodation may be the approaching of bearing in America. “We try not to let patients absolutely behest the way their activity is managed,” says Thiet, whose UCSF bearing centermost offers pools for the early, but not late, stages of labor. “But we do appetite them to accept a say.” After all, in the aftermost 30 years they’ve gotten a say in about aggregate else.

Imagine a pain free child birth without the help of medication. One Grovetown woman is instructing expectant mothers on a technique she says can offer that and more.

It was really painful. I felt really out of control. I couldn’t deal with the contractions towards the end especially, Kristie Press said.

After one painful childbirth, Press was terrified of what was to come when she heard she was expecting again.

When I first got pregnant in the first couple of months even the thought of going to the hospital just really made me want to cry, Press said.

Then she found a video of a woman using hypnosis during childbirth on the Internet.

I went on to have a completely pain free birth, Phillips said.

Now she instructs other women, including Press, on how to relax by reprogramming.

Things that have a negative association we replace those like instead of labor it’s your birth instead of contractions it’s pressure waves, Phillips said.

The technique uses music, thoughts and phrases to reach extreme relaxation.

It kind of feels like being in a tub of warm water.

Believe it or not, Phillips says the techniques may actually have you asking for more.

I really wished it would have lasted a little longer because I was enjoying it so much, she said.

What are the Benefits of HypnoBirthing?

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

HypnoBirthing, when done properly, eliminates the well-documented “Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome” before, during and after birthing;  reduces, and often eliminates, the need for epidurals, other chemical pain relief, episiotomy and other interventions;  shortens the first stage of labour by several hours;  lessens fatigue during labour, leaving you with energy for birth;  your birthing companion is an integral part of the birthing, not an onlooker; more rapid postnatal recovery;  happy, well adjusted babies, resulting in better eating and sleeping routines;  a more relaxed and enjoyable pregnancy;  and a calm, peaceful and confident birth, leaving you and your baby with a positive birthing experience.

Partner or No Partner? That’s the Question.

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

The Role of A Birthing Companion in HypnoBirthing.

I met Carrie (name changed) in a spiritual bookstore at a friend’s gathering for pregnant moms. Carrie had a shy smiling demeanor and was on her 29th week of pregnancy. Carrie was very happy about her pregnancy, except …she did not have a husband. She made a decision to go on having a baby all by herself, she knew she wanted a baby. She was struggling to make piece with the fact that she has no partner to bring to her HypnoBirthing class.

HypnoBirthing classes are structured to involve a partner. And there is a great valid reason for doing that.

First let’s look at a concept of hypnosis.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention to the exclusion of anything else. In hypnosis, a person finds comfort in various stages of physical and mental relaxation following positive suggestions given by her guide. If she listens to a hypnotic recording, she is following a voice of her hypnotic guide on the recording.

However, a hypnotic guide isn’t just any person. It must be a person with whom she has deep rapport, agreement, trust. Such a person is traditionally her husband.

Many modern husbands realized that birth is a natural and normal event in their new family life and is not a medical event. So if there is no emergency, they tend to want to participate and are interested in assisting their wives in the birth of their child. They feel that there is something else they can do, other than just help conceive.

Hence, we invite a husband to be present in a HypnoBirthing class to get familiar with the techniques she is learning, in order to better assist her in her birthing.

If it is not a husband, father of the child, who is going to be a birthing partner, for the sake of this article, I am going to refer to the partner as father. This will invite non-traditional relationships to become open to the concept of partner in HypnoBirthing as well.

HypnoBirthing Techniques

HypnoBirthing Techniques are simple and easy. Just like with any techniques, the key to success is practice. In order for a HypnoBirthing mother to have a successful HypnoBirthing birth, provided all other areas check out as healthy, first of all, she needs to be open to the opportunity that it is possible. And then practice. At home, in class, instilling the habit of using hypnosis for creating her future, creating relaxation, creating unchallenged and peaceful birth. She also needs someone to guide her on that path of learning and practicing. Here is where her partner comes in handy.

Role of Partner

Her hypnotherapist is not usually available to be with her at birth. She can take a cd with a hypnotherapist voice guiding her with positive suggestions and affirmations for birth. Sometimes, listening to a cd becomes irrelevant during birth. So unless her doula is a HypnoBirthing practitioner as well, and can serve as a hypnotic guide, or she does not have a doula, the mom needs her partner to whisper the hypnotic instructions to her during the birth.
This is a function of mother’s birthing companion.

Birth with HypnoBirthing

Celia (name changed) wanted a natural and unassisted birth. She insisted that she is healthy and her body can do the work. She practiced with her partner at home and in class. She started her HypnoBirhting classes in her 20th week of pregnancy. She diligently did all that homework. This includes the reading of the textbook, the listening to the 2 cds, the writing down of her birth plan, some physical exercises, practice of positions, in addition to hypnosis practice, all required by the curriculum. This helps each of them install new skill and behaviors to facilitate the birth experience.

When she went into labor her husband was constantly with her using hypnotic techniques and positive language to help her relax, open and bear down. From time to time her husband instructed her to follow the sound of his voice and gave her hypnotic instructions. Those are the instructions he learned in class. She gave into that familiar and lovely guidance she had gotten accustomed to following.

She had a quick labor. With HypnoBirthing, her husband was giving her hypnotic instructions, but she was not a zombie, not laying helplessly, not needing to cope with pain, which she had none, not motionless. Instead, she was active in her labor. Even though in a birthing trance, she was able to communicate clearly and easily with her partner all her desires to change positions, walk, or take a bath. All natural behavior of a woman in the final stages of pregnancy.

She had her baby girl in 6 hours. Her surges were soft and smooth as if mild cramps. She was happy that she could do it – achieve the type of birth that she wanted, without outside help and solely with her husband.

Together they created their own beautiful loving HypnoBirthing birth.

What were those instructions he was giving her?

Hypnosis Techniques for Partner

Hypnosis techniques for partner are simple. Start by connecting with your heart, and find the place where love resides. Then let that love come through the sound of your voice. Direct that love to softly flow toward your wife and your baby, connect with them. Add strength to your voice showing the willingness and readiness to take the responsibility and make it a safe and comfortable experience for mother and baby. Then add the instructions for desired effect, be it relaxation, calmness, breathing, etc.

Importance of Practice Together

At first father is very unsure of himself in this role. When asked to read the material to the mom, in class, his voice trembles and he seems very tentative, even though the text is simple and clear. I once asked a dad why he is so unsure. He said that all of it is so unknown that he wishes he had that text at home to practice and prepare. To which of course, guess what I said, You got it! From now on and until the birthing time, you are the hypnotist for your wife. Learn the techniques and practice. Because of all voices on earth, if it isn’t mom’s voice the baby wants to hear, it’s dad’s!

How to Practice

Practice in class is a supervised practice in a couples format. At home couples practice both separately and together. Mom practices her own skills and dad practices his, and they practice together as well. More often than not, moms are more diligent in practicing, listening to cds, reading, researching, rehearsing and practicing hypnosis for self. Dads feel that providing for the family is more important and often forget to practice. Then comes labor time his voice is needed there. The HypnoBirthing curriculum requires practicing together is the environment of love and mutual bonding. At home, read scripts to each other, rehearse the voice and modulation, memorizing the language of the scripts and learning to let go and let the imagine soar high. At first practice in the quiet safe comfort of your home, at your own pace and at your own time (but make time to practice!)

According to Mickey Mongan the author of the HypnoBirthing method, it is also useful to practice peaceful behaviors and deep hypnosis in a crowded place with loud noises, where the mother can acquire the skills of quick and deep disconnect from the environment in simulation of when it is not conducive to peaceful progress of her labor (like bustling hospital.)

Testimonial from a Mother

Last week I heard from a HypnoBirthing student-mother making last minute preparations for her labor. A week earlier at her last sonogram one of her twins was in a wrong position threatening to create a necessity for a cesarian delivery. She called her HypnoBirthing professional for help to make her baby turn. In twelve hours after her hypnotic session the baby turned into the correct position. Now both of her babies were head down and ready for birth. She was excited and wrote: “This couldn’t have been done without the power of mind. I believe.” She was given a script for her partner to practice in preparation for her birthing.

Conclusion

Within the framework of the process of HypnoBirthing the partner plays a crucial pivotal role. Partner plays the role of the hypnotist as in a classic hypnotist-client relationship. It is the partner’s responsibility to occupy the conscious mind of the mother and direct and lead her so that her body can easily deliver the baby.

Fearlessly and confidently the HypnoBirthing partner uses the techniques of HypnoBirthing to create a safe and comfortable experience for the birthing mother.

Carie, who did not have a partner, had practiced with her best girl friend.

Reduce Complications with Exercise

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Would you accept that a little affair like approved exercise could abbreviate you and your baby’s accident of alarming interventions? In today’s hospital apple of birthing, it can assume like a abundant mom has little ascendancy over the aftereffect of her abundance and the action her babyish enters the world. You are about to acquisition you may accept added ascribe than you think.

Today’s maternology wards generally assume added like a adjustment shop, abounding of accessories and procedures to “help” what women accept been advised to artlessly do. You may already apperceive some of the accoutrement and techniques doctors generally use to advice a babyish into the world:

• Forceps—an apparatus that puts a abundant accord of absorption on the baby’s close and back and generally after-effects in some able-bodied in adjustment to cull the babyish out.

• Exhaustion Extractor—a cap-like cup that attaches to the baby’s arch and suctions allotment of the attic into the cup. The doctor again pulls and tugs at the baby’s head.

• Episiotomy—according to The Revised Edition of Accustomed Childbirth the Bradley Way, the episiotomy, a two to four inch cut amid the vagina and anus, is the best accepted surgical action done in the U.S. today.

• C-section is best frequently acclimated during times back the babyish is breech, pre-eclampsia is present, fetal ache is occurring, non advantageous uterine contractions exist, abortion to advance (dialate) occurs, baby’s arch is too big, abortion to advance during the blame stage, or there are assorted babies.

All of these techniques affectation a accessible blackmail to you and your baby. If you could agreement blurred your affairs of these obstetric interventions would you? Both Dr. James Clapp and Certified Nurse Midwife Helen Varney, two arresting abstracts on abundance and exercise, address exercise decidedly reduces your charge for medical interventions in abundance and labor.

Dr. Clapp’s studies appearance mothers who acclimatized accustomed an absurd 50 percent abatement in interventions due to fetal abnormalities. Fetal abnormalities generally advance to forceps, vacuum, episiotomy, or C-section, and accommodate low affection rate, attendance of meconium in your baby’s water, and bond entanglement. Helen Varney teaches her Yale nursing Students that these abnormalities are all bargain for the babies of women who exercise. Dr. Clapp adds an amazing statistic; “You abatement the charge for accessible interventions like forceps by 75 percent aloof by exercising.” He additionally letters that your approved exercise addiction decreases the anticipation that your doctor will accomplish an episiotomy by 55 percent. Using exercise, you can save you and your babyish from a awful demanding access into this world.

Diminish Accident of C- Section

In Varney’s Midwifery textbook, a abstraction of aboriginal time moms accepted that appliance abundant women are four and a bisected times beneath acceptable to bear by C-section than desk moms (a 75 percent decrease). That lowers your C-section likelihood from one in three to about one in twelve aloof by exercising.

A desk woman may gestate best or fatigue eventually than one who exercises, which makes your hospital agents activate to worry. As time drags out, the affable agents will administrate the biologic pitocin into your IV. Pitocin will bound override your body’s accustomed contractions and force harder, added acute uterine contractions that account mom an acute bulk of pain. With this added throbbing, a bearing mom is bound offered a affliction abating epidural. In the bosom of artificially abrupt pitocin contractions and an epidural-induced algid abridgement of control, an biting woman has carved her aisle for C-section. But Dr. Clapp letters exercise abandoned offers a 50 percent abatement in charge for pitocin. You can stop the glace abruptness of C-section through exercise.

Avoid Other Complications

Nurse Varney explains that advantageous fit moms accept decreased adventitious of hypertension, hyperinsulimia, and gestational diabetes. In addition, amid appliance women, beneath pregnancies are alarmingly abiding into “post-date gestation” of 42 weeks or more. This actuality helps abate a woman’s affairs of actuality induced and affected into accepting a C-section.

Another aggravation that can be abhorred is preterm birth. Varney letters there is a decreased accident of ad-lib preterm bearing in women who exercise, so your babyish will not be kept for weeks or months after you, in Intensive Care.

How to Exercise for Decreased Interventions

Virtually, behindhand of the blazon of exercise you perform, your accolade will be decreased interventions. Preparing for abundance and commitment can be multifaceted, including aggregate from breath to “labor training” to “belly training” to strength, balance, posture, and flexibility. Start your exercise affairs now! It seems that abundant women absolutely can do article to ascendancy the aftereffect of their delivery.

Coping with pregnancy

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

There is a prevailing idea in society that women are innately equipped through their gender and genes to deal calmly with the rigors of pregnancy, childbirth and childcare. But a new study from the UK’s University of Warwick suggests this may not be the case and that many women, in fact, feel both ill-equipped and ignorant when it comes to the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood.

The study suggests that many women’s feelings of inadequacy in dealing with pregnancy and caring for a newborn baby are partly to do with a trend over the past few decades for moving far away from hometowns and families for work or study, so women do not have the support and advice they need from relatives. It also makes the suggestion that the practice of encouraging women to give birth in hospitals instead of at home means that most women have no experience of childbirth until they give birth themselves.

Dr Angela Davis, a Leverhulme Research Fellow at the University of Warwick’s Centre for the History of Medicine, interviewed over 90 women for the study to discuss their experiences of pregnancy, childbirth and childcare.

She says, ‘Geographical mobility means that women today more often live further away from family, which means they are less likely to have relatives on hand. Also most births take place in hospital so that very few women have been present at childbirth before they have their own child.’

The first part of the study looked at motherhood from 1930 to 1970, where Dr Davis found some surprising results. Although in the 1930s and 1940s women also felt ignorant of sex and childbirth, this was generally because the subjects were taboo and therefore hardly ever mentioned in families.

Dr Davis believes these feelings of ignorance prevail in the 21st century because although women are now better informed about sex, they still are given too little information about the development of pregnancy, childbirth and childcare. Many of the women Dr Davis interviewed said they had tried to be more open with their own children about sex, but most did not believe increased sex education was necessarily a good thing.

‘They did show some level of ambivalence on the subject and many were not sure that this increased knowledge was entirely a good thing,’ said Dr Davis. ‘There was also a distinction between that and education about pregnancy and childbirth which they were more positive about than sex education.’

The study highlighted the fact that many women feel unprepared to care for a newborn baby and that motherhood was not always instinctive. Most of the women in the study agreed that they felt a natural instinct to care for their child, but did not always know how to go about it.

‘The testimonies of the women interviewed for this research indicate how ignorant and ill-equipped many of them felt surrounding the issues of pregnancy, childbirth and infant care as late as the 1960s and indeed this may still apply to women today,’ said Dr Davis.

Most mothers tend to feel frumpy from time to time

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Most mothers tend to feel frumpy from time to time. This is especially true for mothers who give up their jobs and careers to be stay at home mums. The thought of you giving up a lifestyle where you hung out at resorts and night clubs regularly and now are home doing nappy changes tends to hit you like a heavy sack of potatoes. But do not fear there are a few tips that will make you feel like you are on top of the world again.

The first thing you need to do when you begin to feel sad is to look at your baby and all your sorrows will vanish. The thought that you brought this little life into the world will definitely drown your sorrows for sure.

You need not feel like a maid just because you are at home; dressing well will definitely lift your moods. Invest in good clothes that make you feel god about yourself as well as in a good make up kit that you can dab on quickly will be an asset. As a mom you will never have hours to fuss over yourself in the mornings so choose clothes that you will be comfortable in. Keep your make up light so as to avoid having to do regular touch ups.

Use a fragrance that you can layer, one that comes in a bath and shower gel, deodorant, body mist as well as a perfume. This helps to use lesser perfume that may irritate the child and cause allergies yet make you feel fresh.

As a mom you need to be extremely practical. If you are feeling down wear a few pieces of jewelry to perk up your mood. Avoid long earrings that may tempt your toddler, instead opt to wear a trendy necklace or bracelet. Do not wear beads or pearls as your child may choke on it if he manages to break it.

Try and get a friend to baby sit your child while you spend a few hours by yourself. Do simple things like take a walk, read a book or simply go out for a cup of coffee.

Lastly speak to your spouse about the way you feel. If you are feeling unloved or neglected; let him know about it. There is no better person in the world to make you feel better than the father of your child.

FACEBOOK users may feel socially successful in cyberspace but they are more likely to perform poorly in exams

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

FACEBOOK users may feel socially successful in cyberspace but they are more likely to perform poorly in exams, according to new research into the academic impact of the social networking website.

The majority of students who use Facebook every day are underachieving by as much as an entire grade compared with those who shun the site.

Researchers have discovered how students who spend their time accumulating friends, chatting and “poking” others on the site may devote as little as one hour a week to their academic work.

The findings will confirm the worst fears of parents and teachers. They follow the ban on social networking websites in many offices, imposed to prevent workers from wasting time.

About 83% of British 16 to 24-year-olds are thought to use social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo, to keep in touch with friends and organise their social lives.

“Our study shows people who spend more time on Facebook spend less time studying,” said Aryn Karpinski, a researcher in the education department at Ohio State University. “Every generation has its distractions, but I think Facebook is a unique phenomenon.”

Karpinski and a colleague questioned 219 US undergraduates and graduates about their study practices and general internet use, as well as their specific use of Facebook.

They found that 65% of Facebook users accessed their account daily, usually checking it several times to see if they had received new messages. The amount of time spent on Facebook at each log-in varied from just a few minutes to more than an hour.

The Ohio report shows that students who used Facebook had a “significantly” lower grade point average - the marking system used in US universities - than those who did not use the site.

“It is the equivalent of the difference between getting an A and a B,” said Karpinski, who will present her findings this week to the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association.

She has not yet analysed whether a student’s grades continue to deteriorate the longer he or she spends on Facebook.

Some UK students have already spotted the potential danger. Daisy Jones, 21, an undergraduate in her final year at Loughborough University, realised the time she was spending on Facebook was threatening her grades - prompting her to deactivate her account.

“I was in the library trying to write a 2,000-word essay when I realised my Facebook habit had got out of hand,” she said.

“I couldn’t resist going online. You do that, then someone’s photo catches your eye. Before you know it, a couple of minutes has turned into a couple of hours and you haven’t written a thing.” Jones is among the few to have recognised the risks. According to Karpinski’s research, 79% of Facebook-using students believed the time they spent on the site had no impact on their work.

Facebook said: “There is also academic research that shows the benefits of services like Facebook. It’s in the hands of students, in consultation with their parents, to decide how to spend their time.”

Research has already shown that food rich in omega 3 such as fish improves reading, writing and spelling among children.

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Children who followed such a diet before their third birthday had improved scores in reading and problem-solving tests compared to their peers, it was revealed.

In a study that provides some of the strongest links yet between nutrition and academic performance, academics said it also increased the likelihood of remaining in education for longer. It had a particular effect on girls.

Research has already shown that food rich in omega 3 such as fish improves reading, writing and spelling among children.

The latest study, based on research using a kind of porridge eaten in Guatemala but made with corn rather than oats, suggests a wider link between food and brain power.

John Maluccio, lead author and assistant professor of economics at Middlebury College, Vermont, said: “Before this study, only limited evidence spanning childhood to adulthood existed to support claims about the long-term effects of early childhood nutrition.

“This study confirms that the first three years of life represent a window of opportunity when nutrition programs can have lifelong benefits on a child’s development, particularly in education.”

The study was based on children in Guatemala eating “atole”. It was made with corn, rather than the traditional British oats used in porridge, although they share high protein levels. It was mixed with dry skimmed milk and sugar.

Children received supplements between 1969 and 1977, the study, published in the Economic Journal, said.

In 2002 and 2004, researchers returned to Guatemala and collected information on school results.

Men and women who received atole as children achieved higher scores on reading comprehension tests and on non-verbal cognitive tests, it was revealed. Women taking part in the study were more likely to remain in education for another year.

The research was conducted in Guatemala by the Institute for Nutrition in Central America and Panama, Emory University, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the University of Pennsylvania and Middlebury College.

John Hoddinott, a co-author and IFPRI senior research fellow, said: “We have long known that nutrition interventions can provide significant benefits in terms of a child’s health and development.

“This study in Guatemala is important because it shows that improving nutrition in early childhood can have significant educational payoffs into adulthood.”

Jacqui Lowdon, a paediatric dietician from the British Dietetic Association, said the food used in the study would have a similar protien content to normal porridge, but added that poor diet among the children tested may be responsible for the dramatic results.

“We already know that good nutrition is important for long-term health and especially important for brain development in the first few years of life,” she said.

Essay exams can be a cause of anxiety for many students, so we thought we’d go to the experts for some ideas that might help.

A few tips can help you prepare and feel more confident going into any essay style exam. The key to remember about essay exams is that they require you to demonstrate your knowledge in the context of the course’s broader themes. For this reason, it is important to ask yourself how all of the material, week by week, fits into the general themes described on your course outline.

When preparing for your exam, start with an overview of the material and ask yourself how it all fits together. How might you incorporate the material to discuss a larger concept? Once you have identified the broader course concepts, start to categorize and organize information into these different themes. Remember to use active study strategies when consolidating the information; for example, creating charts to organize your information can help you compare, contrast, and analyze ideas with respect to one another. Try discussing the information with friends in the course, or even your roommates and parents to see if you can explain the ideas to others.

Always remember to be critical and analytical! You want to think about the material in more depth. Ask yourself: Why is this important? How could I see this information from different viewpoints? Try creating potential questions, and plan out how you would answer them. By constantly evaluating the material, you’ll start to remember it with more confidence.

When actually writing the exam, make sure you understand what the essay question is asking you to do. Look for words like define, identify, describe, relate, demonstrate, and evaluate. Not all of these words mean the same thing, so it is important to recognize what you are expected to discuss. With essay exams it is always important to develop a thesis; with a point of view on the subject it will be much easier to organize your information in a way that has meaning, making your argument much stronger. Always make an outline before you start writing–it will save you lots of time during the actual writing process. Make sure to use specific examples as evidence to support any claims you argue. Most importantly, try to relax; the essay exam is a great opportunity to show how much you know!

techniques and discipline

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Whether you wish to specialise in a career in contract law, corporate law or any other aspect of the legal profession, you will first need to pass your law exams; and the better the grade you achieve then the more choice will be available to you. So, whether you are studying as an undergraduate or taking your professional body exams, passing with flying colours should be your aim.

If you are studying law, the sooner you develop good techniques and discipline when it comes to reading widely for your subject, the better. It may be possible to pass law exams by doing the minimum of work, but to truly understand your subject and therefore be able to succeed in the workplace you will need to ensure that you read as widely as possible - not just the course recommended textbooks.

For instance, subscribing to current law journals will ensure that in addition to learning case law and theory, you will keep up-to-date with what is happening in the real world of law.

In addition, when purchasing text books it is important that you secure the latest published edition. In a subject as fluid as law there are frequent changes, additions and amendments to written texts and it is crucial that you have the latest up-to-date text books. Answering a question in an exam based on out-of-date information will mean that you will not score as well as those who have their fingers on the pulse.

One essential text book that every law student should possess, regardless of at what level they are studying is a Dictionary of Law. Indeed, to pass your law exams with flying colours you will need to know how to present legal terminology accurately and as concisely as possible.

Of course, passing law exams is not just about extensive reading during term time and holidays, it is also about being able to plan your time and workload effectively, especially when it comes to revision. Don’t try to cram all your study into a short period just before exams at the expense of everything else, especially your social life. Make sure that you allow time to unwind and socialise with friends and peers as you will need rest and recreation. Instead, draw up a revision plan that is ‘chunked’. That means that you break your workload down into manageable and most importantly, realistic chunks.

What’s more, think through the topics that will be examined. And, although reading extensively places the information into your brain, you should also practice writing exam answers so that you can understand and effectively transmit that information. Therefore, by preparing well in advance and ensuring you read up on the essential law books you can help improve your chances of passing your law exams.

Lose weight with hypnosis

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

f you are overweight you may be tired of everyone telling
you that losing weight is just about eating less food and or
consuming fewer calories. You may have tried every diet old
and new. But, sometimes it seems that our bodies have found a
way to turn a plate of lettuce into a pound of fat! Many
people who attempt weight loss discover sooner or later their
efforts are complicated by metabolic programming that keeps
weight on the body regardless of how one changes their eating
habits.

If you or your friend or client is overweight and you?d like to see if such programming is affecting weight loss efforts take the following questionnaire:

? Do you find that no matter how much you starve yourself the
weight just
doesn?t fall off as quickly as it should?
? Do you find yourself eating less than your more slender
friends and still don?t
lose weight?
? Do you find your food cravings going way up even as the
pounds begin to fall
off? As if you were starving instead of dieting?
? Do you become tired and lethargic when dieting?
? Do you gain back all the weight you?ve lost from a diet
with alarming speed?

If you answered ?yes? to any of these questions you probably
have some subconscious metabolic programming to hold weight
on your body instead of burning it up for energy as it
should.

Now here?s the good news! There are many ways we can deal
with this programming through hypnosis so you don?t have to
fight your body as well as your food cravings to lose weight!

First, we must look at the likely causes of this programming.

The metabolism of food is the intricate process by which
nutrients from food are consumed and utilized by the body. It
is a complex process in which several factors are involved.
One is the function of the thyroid gland, the ?master switch?
which regulates the rate of cellular metabolism. Through
hypnotic imagery we can turn up the production of thyroxin,
the primary metabolic hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
More thyroxin means more fat burned more weight loss and more
energy for you. There may be medical reasons for thyroid
dysfunction, which is why we suggest a full physical
examination and possible testing of your thyroid function
before proceeding with a course of hypnotherapy.

Another key element to the body?s metabolic processes is the
activity of two key pancreatic hormones: insulin and
glucagons. These key metabolic hormones cause our body to
store or burn fat. The types of food you eat directly affect
the activities of these hormones. In general, it seems that
most carbohydrates, including sugars, cause the secretion of
insulin, which increases sugar metabolism and storage.
Glucagons, secreted after a low carb meal, help the body burn
protein and d fat, including the body?s own fat reserves.
This is part of the reason low carb diets are becoming
popular.

So how does hypnosis help you change your eating choices?
Because all eating habits become rooted in the subconscious
mind, simply deciding to eat differently rarely is sufficient
to create long term changes in our eating habits. The imagery
of hypnosis targets these subconscious programs and changes
them in a way that is both permanent and nearly effortless.
Personal hypnotic scripts which can be recorded on a self
hypnosis tape and listened to every night in bed can be
created by working with a Hypnotherapist. In addition, it is
of critical importance to address emotional eating habits, a
process I outline in my three part article True Secrets of
Permanent Weight Loss.

Exercise is also a key component in the activation of the
metabolism. Researchers have discovered that regular
exercise, even as little as thirty minutes a day, speeds up
metabolism not only during exercise but also for many hours
afterwards, even when you are resting. Of course, many of us
have a hard time with exercise. Enter again the power of
hypnosis. Hypnotic suggestion can be used to increase one?s
motivation toward physical activity as well as increase
strength and endurance. But often it takes much more than
direct hypnotic suggestion to get more involved with exercise
again.

One of the innovative processes we use can take you
back to what you enjoyed doing physically as a child. You can
pick one or two of these activities that you will again
enjoy! We use the power of hypnosis to bring back the
excitement you experienced as a child at play. We can also
return to those traumatic experiences that caused us to turn
ourselves off to the joys of physical activity, and rescue
the past self from these traumas. An experience of being
rejected, humiliated or injured on the playground in a team
sport, for example, can lead one to shut down the desire to
play outside. Our rescue mission allows the child to receive
comfort and a promise of safety from the adult self along
with an invitation to play outside in a new way with the
adult.

One of the more common sources of metabolic programming is
genetic. Some human genetic lines (South Pacific Islander and
Eskimos provide just two extreme examples) preserve fat on
their bodies more readily because these traits served their
ancestors well for thousands of years, especially in times of
famine. Changing these genetic codes within our DNA may be
difficult for even the most skilled practitioners. However,
with hypnosis we can persuade the metabolism to override
these DNA programs and help us let go of fat. Many times my
clients have said to me ?My whole family is overweight!? This
is the time to utilize specific hypnotic suggestions geared
to override DNA programming.

Another common theme among those who struggle with weight
loss is that the subconscious mind may be afraid to lose
weight because if one?s weight problems disappear than one
might actually have to face other scarier issues. One client
told me in trance that if she lost that weight over which she
was obsessing she would have to ?Do something with my life,
and I don?t know what to do!? At the Institute we can test
for these issues and offer a plan of healing. One valuable
technique that can be used here is a journey to the future
self to discover how to successfully fulfill one?s life
purpose.

Another common theme I have discovered among women clients
with metabolic programming to stay fat is the body?s need to
insulate itself with fat in order to protect itself from
unwanted sexual advances. A large number of my obese clients
are victims of childhood sexual abuse. Many others have
gained weight to silence their own unmet sexual needs within
an unfulfilling marriage. Others use weight as an excuse not
to meet men and thus risk rejection or betrayal. If you are
not aware of such subconscious programming it could be deeply
buried in the subconscious mind, and still be affecting your
metabolism. Your hypnotherapist can help you discover and
heal these problems. I have personally experienced great
success in rescuing clients from early sexual abuse trauma,
which has often resulted in rapid weight loss without any
apparent dietary change.

I have given you some of the more common causes of cellular
programming to retain fat and I?ve outlined some of the steps
needed to reduce or eliminate such programs. If such
programming complicates you or your patient?s efforts, please
feel free to call/ or email our office for a referral to a
hypnotherapist in your area. You should be aware that not all
hypnotherapists are trained in the advanced systems described
in these pages. It is your responsibility to see that the
one you see has adequate training and experience in these
areas.

Think Yourself Thin

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Your mind and body are intimately connected. This connection is a valuable key to successful weight loss and weight maintenance. Recruiting the power of your mind can change your weight as well as your world.

Observe your thoughts immediately before eating and working out. As simple as it seems, keeping a diary or journal gives you insight into your emotions and how you view certain activities. If that creepy guy at the gym puts you off working out, a little insight will persuade you to change your workout time or find a new gym.

You might discover you always reach for a high calorie snack or drink when you eat pasta for lunch. Too many carbohydrates and not enough protein can cause blood sugar irregularities that spike your appetite and drive you to snack on whatever is handy and fast.

Hypnosis conducted by an expert can literally change your subconscious mind, and get your thoughts and emotions lined up with your weight loss goals. You can find a certified hypnotist in your area by contacting the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

weight loss hypnosis

Your religious beliefs and spiritual outlook can be a rich source of support for weight loss. Many churches today offer weight
loss support groups and clubs for dieters. Studies have shown prayer and religious belief can make a difference in whether people have a sense of belonging and meaning necessary for success and satisfaction in all areas of life.

Understand that your thought processes lead you to the choices you make, what today’s actions will be, and which habits you
develop over time. Your choices, actions, and habits lead to the body you will have, your actual weight, and your level of
fitness.

Remember to design your present fitness and weight loss goals with your present life issues in mind. Don’t expect to lose 20
pounds during the holiday season when many of us are stressed by an overload of good and bad emotions, and events. If you’re out of shape don’t shoot for a super model’s body by next Summer. Your mind is your best ally in weight loss, and setting goals must match what you can comfortably and realistically achieve. Remember, fitness and weight control is a journey, not a destination.

Controlling your weight and avoiding weight gain as you get older are important ways to prevent a host of weight-related health problems.

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Controlling your weight and alienated weight accretion as you get earlier are important means to anticipate a host of weight-related bloom problems.

Indeed, if you are added than 20 pounds over your ideal weight, you are at greater accident for a rogues’ arcade of potentially baleful conditions, including diabetes, aerial claret pressure, coronary affection disease, endometrial cancer, adverse beddy-bye apnea, and breast cancer.

What’s more, best bodies who are ample tend to abstain exercise, and that abstention aloof adds to the assessment paid for added pounds.

If you accept a desk affairs and are overweight, you are at a college accident of cardiovascular ache and added bloom problems. And, if you already accept a medical action such as aerial cholesterol, actuality ample puts you at college accident for complications.

The acceptable account is that alike bashful amounts of weight accident can advance your bloom significantly. Accident of 10% of anatomy weight can abate claret pressure, aerial cholesterol, triglyceride, and aerial claret amoroso levels.

Today, there are abounding procedures that can accord and advice bodies accident weight effectively. One of the accepted action in accident weight is through hypnosis.

However, abounding misconceptions accept appear up with commendations to the appliance of analgesic in accident eight. And because it does not absorb drugs or any kinds of medications and surgery, abounding bodies tend to anticipate that accident weight through analgesic seems to be one of the safest weight accident program.

To apperceive added about analgesic and its furnishings on accident weight, actuality is a account of some facts that will accord you an acumen about what it can do to your anatomy weight.

1. Analgesic can be an imminently chancy if not done appropriately and not advance by bodies who are awful accomplished with the absolute abstraction of hypnosis.

Even if abounding bodies tend to anticipate that analgesic will not affectation approaching crisis to their health, still, it is important to apperceive that the being who will do the action is accomplished abundant and that he or she knows what factors to accede afore accomplishing the procedures.

2. Analgesic abandoned cannot annihilate balance fat from the anatomy and, therefore, accomplish somebody lose weight.

Most bloom experts argue that analgesic should abandoned be a allotment of a accomplished alloyed process. It should never be acclimated as the sole weight accident procedure.

Moreover, one affair of analgesic will abandoned accept actual basal after-effects on an individual’s weight. When accident weight, analgesic akin with psychotherapy will be added able than analgesic alone. This is because analgesic is abandoned a accompaniment of acutely adequate the mind, in which one can still be in ascendancy of his or her own body.

3. Analgesic is one way of accepting into the brainy accompaniment of a person. When a being is on the “hypnotic stage,” the anatomy is added acknowledging to suggestibility because of its agitated accompaniment of concentration.

However, this does not necessarily beggarly that through hypnosis, one can already “reprogram” the apperception of an individual.

In reality, analgesic can abandoned run the ambit from trouble-free alleviation action to able admission managed by a able hypnotists. Hence, it should not be advised abstruse and bewitched in its upshots.

Boiled down, bodies should be added acquainted that analgesic is not a sole able action in accident weight. It is added of a facilitator of assorted analysis techniques.

Therefore, it should be accumulated with added weight accident administration affairs to be able in authoritative bodies lose balance weight. In this manner, bodies will be able to lose added weight with a added airy and active accompaniment of mind.

As they say, a advantageous apperception is a advantageous body.

There are so many cancers that can invade your body

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

There are so many cancers that can invade your body if you smoke. Some people have cancer genes that are hereditary and if you smoke, these might hit you sooner. There are the cancers to your liver, heart, lungs, and these can come from the use of cigarettes. There are several and some of them we have never heard of or even read about. Our hospitals are full of people of all ages sick from all of these cancers. Some of them may never get out of the hospital alive.

Some of these sick people have to be put in nursing homes to be watched over on a 24 hour basis. These cancers do not care if you are man or woman as they will attack you both the same. They tell us that women out live men and this might be one reason. Some women do not start smoking as early as some men, but they are catching up quickly. We now have just about as many women as men smoking in this country. You really need to try to quit. We have so many doctors in the world for just these cancers, but you do not want to be one of the patients that keep them in business.

If we could get more of smokers to quit, we could put these doctors to work on better things than having to fight cancers caused by smoking cigarettes. We do not need more doctors, we just need to make ourselves healthier by quitting smoking. There are so many other things that we need doctors for. In some areas of medicine, we do not have enough doctors to do the job and then in other areas we have too many. If you would look in your medical insurance group, you might be surprised by the number of doctors that are there.

In some cases you might have to go several miles to see your doctor because you might not have a doctor in your plan or medical group in your city. A lot of time you might have to see a certain professional and these will be all in the big cities. Most of the time the only reason why this is they can make so much more money in these bigger cities then they can in the smaller ones making it harder for you. If you want to avoid having to see one of these specialist doctors because of smoking cigarettes, all you have to do is quit. This would be the simplest solution for your health and your pocketbook.

Cigarette use in California is in steep decline

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Department of Public Health data show that smoking rates for adults have declined 41% since a 25-cent-a-pack tax on cigarettes was enacted.
Anti-smoking advocates are celebrating this week’s 20th anniversary of California’s groundbreaking tobacco-control effort by releasing new data showing that cigarette use is continuing its steep decline in the Golden State.

Data released by the state Department of Public Health show that smoking rates among adults have declined 41% since voters approved the California Tobacco Control Program, which instituted a 25-cent-a-pack tax on cigarettes that has funneled 5 cents per pack sold to tobacco control.
Last year also saw youth smoking decline to 14.6%, one of the lowest rates in the nation, state health officials say.

Meanwhile, telephone calls to the “1 800 No Butts” help line are up 25% over last year, data show. Kimberly Belshe, secretary of California’s Health and Human Services Agency, said in an announcement that authorities estimate the program has over the last two decades saved 1 million lives and $86 billion in healthcare costs.

A victory against tobacco

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

IT IS an odious victory, yet a victory nonetheless. After millions of premature deaths from cigarettes since the first surgeon general’s warnings on packs in the mid-1960s, the House voted last week, 298-112, to give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco.

Henry Waxman, the California crusader on this issue for nearly three decades, called the vote historic, though “it has taken us far too long to get to this point . . . FDA is the only agency with the right combination of scientific expertise, regulatory experience, and public health mission to oversee these products effectively.”

The measure now heads to the Senate where it will be championed by Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who has declared tobacco “the most lethal of all consumer products.” Kennedy will face some opposition by tobacco-state colleagues such as North Carolina’s Richard Burr. But even the number one recipient of tobacco campaign contributions on Capitol Hill, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, acknowledged earlier this year the tidal wave of health concerns about tobacco, citing public no-smoking ordinances throughout his state. “While we are still an important tobacco state, it is not as pervasive as it used to be,” McConnell said. “. . . The tobacco culture has largely ended in Kentucky.”

The odious part is that tobacco culture is not going away anytime soon. Tobacco still has its tentacles reaching insidiously into state and local politics. Take North Dakota, for instance. Last month, a bid to ban tobacco products on state college campuses failed and last week, the North Dakota House voted down a bill to ban smoking in cars by adults if children under 16 are inside. The law was proposed by middle school children in Williston. One Republican, Representative Darrell Nottestad of Grand Forks, supported the bill saying, “An infant in a smoking car has no one to speak for it.”

Congress and the Obama administration have done a great service by jacking up the federal cigarette tax this month by 62 cents a pack. As many studies have shown, raising taxes cuts smoking rates. But that still leaves plenty of poor countries to prey on and despite tobacco-control initiatives in many countries, smoking-related deaths are currently on track to rise from its current 5.4 million a year to 8 million people a year, according to the World Health Organization. The CEO of Philip Morris International, Louis Camilleri, earned $37 million in compensation last year, a 68 percent raise. Unlike Detroit car executives who were shamed out of their corporate jets, Camilleri’s compensation includes personal use of the company jet, the Associated Press reported last month.

The bill passed by the House would limit more than ever outdoor advertising near schools, ban remaining sports and entertainment sponsorships, ban deceptive “light” and “mild” descriptions of cigarettes and allow the FDA to limit the amount of key ingredients such as nicotine and limit or reduce other ingredients such as menthol or candy-like flavors.

But in order to reduce political roadblocks that could easily be put up by an industry that has thrown $62 million in campaign cash at congressional and presidential races since 1990, the legislation would grant the tobacco industry nonvoting status on a new tobacco products scientific advisory committee. Tobacco manufacturers would get two seats and tobacco growers would get a third. Seven of the nine voting members would be scientists, doctors, or otherwise from the healthcare field.

That understandably rankled the most ardent of tobacco control advocates, but it was enough for Philip Morris to break ranks with lesser cigarette makers to support the legislation, and still retain the support of groups like the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. That Philip Morris or someone from the tobacco industry is about to become an official arm of the government is annoying, but it is better than the endless arms race of lawyers, false advertising, and feel-good cigarette sponsorships. The tobacco bill means of course that cigarettes themselves will not be banned. But America has moved one step closer to blunting the influence of Big Tobacco.

The Dangers of Smoking Cigarettes

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

The sad actuality is cigarette smoker is allotment of abounding of our lives, behindhand of whether we smoke or not. Unfortunately, this includes approaching babies as well.

Surveys appearance that abounding mothers still smoke cigarettes during their pregnancy. Best acceptable these women are blind of how adverse cigarette smoker absolutely is on their approaching babyish and are blind that smoker cigarettes during abundance is one of the above causes of babyish deaths in the association today.

Basically, cigarette smoke abandoned is abounding of chemicals, some studies alike accompaniment it has added than 2,500 chemicals. Some chemicals like tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine are advised the best alarming actuality for the fetus. It has continued been accurate how these chemicals can abundantly affect the development of the fetus central the mother’s womb.

First of all, mothers who smoke while abundant run a accident of ectopic pregnancy. This is abnormally applicable aback the mother is a abundant smoker during the aboriginal trimester of her pregnancy.

Ectopic abundance refers to the accompaniment wherein the antecedent is anchored alfresco the uterus, which is adverse to what accustomed abundance should be. Usually, it is anchored in the fallopian tube. In this manner, the fetus has to be removed because this affectionate of abundance will never survive. This fetus will never survive alfresco of the uterus area a fetus gets all the aliment and aegis that it needs. Prolonging this action will alone accident the mother’s life.

Also, smoker cigarettes during abundance increases the anticipation that the mother will advance complications in the placenta. Letters appearance that placental problems are absolutely accident in about 1% of pregnancies. The best accepted botheration is “placenta previa” area the placenta is affiliated actual low in the uterus and is about at the cervix.

Another botheration with smoker cigarettes during abundance is the abasement of fetal growth. The actuality is cigarette smoker during abundance after-effects in low babyish bearing weight. For abounding years now letters accept apparent that there accept been cogent differences amid babies with mothers who smoked cigarettes during abundance and those who accept non-cigarette smoker mothers.

Unfortunately, greater risks are imposed on babies who counterbalance beneath than the accustomed babies. They may access assertive diseases like bookish palsy, brainy retardation, or worse – death.

There are additionally letters on how cigarette smoker during abundance increases the probabilities of bearing defects such as broken lip and broken palate.

Moreover, babies built-in with mothers who are cigarette smokers accept college incidences of abrupt babyish afterlife syndrome. If anytime these breed survive, they may still acquire diseases like asthma, behavioral problems, or acquirements disabilities.

Then there are the post-pregnancy woes…

For babies with mothers who smoke regularly, problems still lurk aural their environment. This is abnormally accurate to mothers who smoke alike aback they are breastfeeding their babies.

Studies accept appear that nicotine can be anesthetized on to the babyish through breastfeeding. There accept been abstracts that prove the attendance of nicotine in the babies arrangement through urine testing. It afterwards showed that there is a college allotment of nicotine begin on babies who breastfeed to cigarette smoker mothers.

Most experts argue that the botheration lies aural the mother’s appetite to get aback to smoker cigarettes appropriate afterwards she gives birth.

Unfortunately, aback the mother continues to smoke during the determinative years of her adolescent life, affairs are she is already abstraction a adolescent that will best acceptable be a cigarette smoker themselves.

So, what’s the point here? The actuality that the mother does not affliction for her own bloom is one thing. But the actuality that she puts greater accident on her babyish because of her carnality is addition thing.

Babies should be accustomed the appropriate to alive a decent, normal, and advantageous life. So, for the “moms-to-be” out there, amuse accumulate in apperception that your babies should not be affected to ache from the continued ambit dangers associated with cigarette smoking. Let’s booty affliction of them by not smoker cigarettes.

Science Shows Hypnosis Helps Childbirth

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Hypnosis techniques can help in pregnancy. Recent news documents its use in helping women relax and prepare for childbirth.
Hypnobirthing or Hypnosis childbirth or hypnotherapy is used with expectant moms to alleviate their fears. It is also used in the birthing process for those who can’t tolerate anesthesia, according to recent news.

Pain control is one of the main purposes of hypnotherapy, which is different than hypnosis in that it is induction oriented towards use of hypnosis for medicine and counseling. Most recognized organizations, such as the American Board for Clinical Hypnotherapy and the National Board for Clinical Hypnotherapy require that an individual be a licensed medical practitioner or counselor before being able to practice and obtain certification. Its use in helping with pain control has been established both in clinical studies and research. Training is intensive, coursework is required, and examinations administered.

Anxiety in pregnancy
is common, with much of the anxiety coming from concerns about the baby. There are numerous websites that respond to this concern. Hypnotherapy is a technique that can help diminish anxiety, reduce stress, and help in the whole childbirth process, according to the discussions in the American Chronicle.

Although many women experience a certain degree of pain during childbirth, authorities observe that labor pains are individual. Some women experience more pain than others. Learning to relax the muscles and the mind could be helpful, given what is involved in the induction methods that teach the individual how to re-visualize and re-process information so pain is reduced.

Home Birth

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Pregnancy, and childbirth, are very transformational events in life. As hospital birth techniques become more popular, the risks involved with them become more evident. With everyone “going green” these days, natural options in childbirth are on the rise (as they should have been forever!)  Many women, are unaware that they have options. Home birth, has been around since the beginning of our existence. But for some women, the thought of giving birth at home, is “scary”, and “dangerous”.  Statistically, women who give birth at home, have less need for medical interventions such as forcep deliveries, and the ever popular episiotomy. But, is it safe?

Certified Profesional Midwife’s or CPM’s, are skilled, and well trained individuals, who offer safe, natural, comfortable, home birth to their clients. CPM’s have to meet rigorous requirements, to become certified. They are trained, in natural, normal, healthy, pregnancies, and birth. Studies, and statistics alike, have shown that the outcome for homebirth vs. clinical birth, is the same if not better. Imagine, being able to birth your baby, in the comfort of your own home. To be able to eat, drink, move, or even dance, freely, without being hooked up to wires, and IV’s. It is possible! CPM’s take on women who are having normal, healthy pregnancies. Low risk, or No risk. As always, if there is a serious complication in a pregnancy, a midwife would never hesitate to refer to a specialist.

Giving birth is an amazing journey, and home birth has so much to offer. Many CPM’s offer the rental of birthing tubs, as well as utilizing yourself, or even your partner if you wish, to deliver the baby. CPM’s respect child birth a normal event, and believe that your birth should be excatly how you vision it.

Orgasmic Childbirth

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

“Trying to have an orgasmic birth defeats the object,” she says.

“I just got into this ecstatic state where I had these peaks of orgasm. There were these rolling waves coming through me where I was laughing and crying. I didn’t feel like I was having contractions. They were more like rushes. I did not actually experience pain, I experienced intense sensations.”

For the majority of women who have given birth – and most of the men who have watched them – these “sensations” are a euphemism for pain. And they certainly don’t feel anything like an orgasm.

But Hartnell says this is definitely what happened during labour with her son Orus, now three and a half. She had a water birth at home over a 12-hour period and the “orgasmic rushes” kept coming from about two-thirds of the way through.

“It was the most overwhelming pleasure I have ever felt in my life,” Hartnell says. “It was like an energetic movement through me.”

She did not do much to prepare for the birth, she says. “I do yoga to keep my body open and flexible and I have practised different forms of meditation. But I had only read one book about birth – I didn’t want to fill my head with information, I just wanted to be open to the process.”

Now her experience has gone global. Hartnell, 29, a full-time mother from the island of Kauai, Hawaii, features in a documentary, Orgasmic Birth, which aired on ABC’s 20/20 in the US earlier this year and is being screened at special events all over the world, including several recent midwifery gatherings in Britain.

Hartnell’s husband had filmed her giving birth and they agreed to let the director use the footage.

“It was a really major deal sharing the most intimate and vulnerable moments of my life with the world,” she says. “But I had the sense that sharing this story could help other women to break through their fear and have a beautiful experience of birthing.”

The response to the film has been one of both fascination and horror.

For many women, the idea that childbirth can be orgasmic is at best hippyish and possibly offensive – a notion that at once piles pressure on to women to find pleasure in giving birth, and seems to deny the pain the majority experience.

One heavily pregnant blogger writes that she “can understand pain being natural in childbirth and letting your body take over and making it as enjoyable as you can. But orgasmic? No. Whoever finds that orgasmic needs help, in my opinion.”

Another suggests that they “wouldn’t like to think my mother had an orgasm while giving birth to me”.

Hartnell, however, reports receiving hundreds of messages from enthusiastic supporters, including from several pregnant women who changed their birth plans after they had watched the film.

The title of the documentary is actually slightly misleading. Because while it features interviews with several women who swear they have had an orgasm during labour (and even shows eye-popping footage of them experiencing this), it is really about “undisturbed birth” – natural labour in a home setting, without drugs, or even gas and air.

It is only in this environment that a handful of women are able to reach orgasm, says Marsden Wagner, MD, former director of women and children’s health for the World Health Organisation.

“It’s got to be how it is when you make love with someone,” he says in the documentary. “It’s got to be safe, secure and uninterrupted.”

The documentary features Ina May Gaskin, the most famous birth activist in the US, whose book, Spiritual Midwifery, has been a birthing bible for celebrity earth mothers such as Davina McCall and the actor Isla Fisher. An advocate of “ecstatic birth” – pleasurable, drug-free labour – May Gaskin once conducted a poll of 151 women in which 32 reported having at least one orgasmic birth.

She says that an ecstatic birth “is the best natural high that I know of. Women don’t have a way to know how their body works until they really try it out in birth.”

The idea that birth can be orgasmic isn’t new. The British birth guru Sheila Kitzinger says she has met “hundreds” of women during the course of her career who report experiencing orgasm during labour – some were hoping for it, others were taken completely by surprise.

She herself has experienced it during three of her four labours (she has five daughters: one birth was twins).

“It is difficult for a man to understand,” she says, “hard, too, for any woman who has had an average hospital birth. But it can be one of the most profound psychosexual experiences in a woman’s life.

“Each contraction may bring a rush of joy so overwhelming that the pain recedes into the background.”

She puts this partly down to simple biology. “The pressure of the baby’s head against the walls of the vagina and the fanning out of the tissues as the head descends bring, for some women, an unexpected sensation of sexual arousal, even of ecstasy.”

But is this really an orgasm? Or just a very unusual sensation? “It can be orgasmic. People recognise it as an orgasm. And it can be a multiple orgasm, one with each push.”

The film’s producer, birth educator Debra Pascali-Bonaro, says a woman’s ability to feel intense physical pleasure during childbirth is “the best-kept secret”.

So well kept that many women would argue that the phenomenon does not exist.

There is debate over whether these women have really been experiencing a sexual climax, or are simply having some form of sado-masochistic response, mistaking intense pain for pleasure.

After some critics in the US wrote the idea off as a “fairytale”, one of the film’s orgasmic subjects, Tamra Larter, a mother of two from New Jersey, clarified that she “felt something resembling an orgasm” and that the sensations she experienced “were something different than sex, but similar enough [so] I feel okay using the word orgasmic.”

Whether you believe in orgasmic birth or not, labour is not so unlike sex, says Christine Grabowska, senior lecturer in midwifery at Thames Valley University.

“Labour does naturally involve a crescendo and those observing can hear that the noises women make are similar to those of love-making – which can embarrass their partners.

“French birthing guru Michel Odent has aligned the two and said that women should birth in the place they make love.”

She has known of women who have been able to “go with the rhythmic flow” and describe the sensation as a “huge orgasm”.

Hartnell stresses that “there was never any sexual stimulation of any sort” during her labour. But many of the processes associated with labour also happen during sex, such as the release of oxytocin and endorphins into the bloodstream.

Anyone who has had an overdue pregnancy knows that midwives recommend nipple stimulation and/or sex to bring on contractions.

Why then do we feel so uncomfortable about the idea of women having an orgasm when they are actually giving birth?

“It crosses the margin of decency – which I think is wrong,” says Kitzinger.

“We’re told that sex is different from childbirth. In the same way, it is considered indecent to experience intense physical satisfaction from breastfeeding.”

Many women naturally resent the idea that they are supposed to “enjoy” labour and “embrace the pain”, and even Kitzinger, who has been preaching the gospel of orgasmic birth for the past 30 years, agrees that it would be wrong to hold up orgasm as a new gold standard for women in labour.

“The orgasm is a side effect, not the goal,” she says. “We don’t want mothers or midwives feeling that they’ve failed if the woman doesn’t have an orgasm.

“And I would like to say to all the men out there: please don’t expect your partner to produce an orgasm. She may be faking it in bed but don’t expect her to fake it during childbirth.”

University Hospitals study links childbirth to women’s obesity

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

For many women, getting back to their pre-pregnancy weight may be harder than the act of childbirth. But not losing the extra pounds could result in serious health risks later on.

Research conducted by physicians at University Hospitals Case Medical Center showed that childbirth raises the risk of a woman becoming obese. The results of that study were published in the February American Journal of Public Health.

The findings underscore previous studies that have shown that women, particularly ethnic minorities, who give birth have a much greater chance of becoming obese than women who don’t give birth.

It’s a serious problem, said Dr. Esa Davis, a family medicine physician at UH who led the study.

“Within the first year after childbirth, if you don’t lose the weight, [more weight] will accumulate over time,” she said.

The UH study analyzed 10 years’ worth of medical data, from 1980 through 1990, of nearly 3,000 adolescent girls and women ages 14 to 22 who in 1979 were neither pregnant nor obese.

Women in the group who gave birth to at least one child were three times more likely to be obese five years later than women who never gave birth.

White women had the lowest obesity rate (9.1 per 100) compared with black women (15.1 per 100) and Hispanics (12.5 per 100).

The study also found that:

White women are more likely to gain more weight than is necessary during pregnancy, but minority women are more likely to retain excess weight after birth.

Of the childbearing women who became obese within two years after giving birth, only 11 percent returned to a normal body-mass index in the remainder of the five years following childbirth.

The younger a woman was when she gave birth, the more likely she would become obese.

The more education a woman’s mother had obtained, the lower incidents of obesity, even lower than that of women who never gave birth.

The UH research comes as the Institute of Medicine is revisiting its 1990 guidelines (See chart at left, “Current Guidelines”) for weight gain in pregnancy. Those guidelines were designed to maximize healthy baby weight with little regard to the impact on the mother, Davis said….

Snacking during childbirth is safe, says study in British Medical Journal

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

EATING while in the throes of childbirth should no longer be a medical taboo, according to a study released today.

The duration of labour, the need for assisted delivery, and caesarean rates were all unaffected by munching between contractions, found the study, published by the British Medical Journal.

Doctors the world over have long discouraged women in labour from eating, for fear that it could lead to breathing food into the lungs in the case of an emergency caesarean while under general anaesthetic.

But such incidents have declined dramatically in recent years, mainly due to the use of local anaesthesia.

Moreover, some doctors have long argued that fasting while in labour - which can last many, many hours - may be bad for the mother and the baby.

Studies to date have been inconclusive, so a research team led by Professor Andrew Shennan at King’s College London investigated the effect of eating during labour on delivery rates.

The study split 2426 first-time healthy mothers into two groups. The first was only allowed to drink water, the usual practice.

The second group were encouraged to snack regularly on bread, biscuits, fruits, low fat yoghurt, isotonic drinks, and fruit juice.

Across a wide range of measures - spontaneous vaginal delivery, duration of labour, percentage of caesareans - there was virtually no difference between the two groups.

Even the rate of vomiting, about 35 per cent, was the same.

Nor were the babies affected by their mothers munching, or not, during labour.

Labor and Childbirth

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

In every woman’s life, there comes a time when she asks herself: “Who can be with me during labor and birth?” Yes, you’ve guessed right, you’re getting ready for your child birth.
Life’s all about decisions, you decide what you’re job’s going to be, what house will you buy, when or with whom you’ll have your baby, what kind of mother will you be.
After nine months of waiting, hoping, wishing, dreaming, here you are – just before giving birth.
Before you start worrying about breastfeeding and diapers, here are some questions you need to know the answer.

Who can be with me during labor and birth?

In the majority of cases, the hospital usually lets the mother decide whom she wants to have with her during the birth. This includes fathers, partners, children, other family members, or friends. You may also have a midwife, or doula, a labor support person, who will be there for you; she has special training in helping women cope with birth and labor.

What happens during a normal labor and birth in your setting?

Questions like if the doctors will give you drugs to speed up the birth, or if you’re going to pass through labor in your own time – these questions are normal.
Your GP should explain to you the normal procedures, or what are the chances for a C section (a major operation in which a doctor cuts through the mother’s stomach into her womb and removes the baby through the opening).

What to do when I’m in labor?

Find out if you can walk during labor, or what positions are recommended and comfortable for you.
You may also need to know if you’re baby’s doing fine, that’s why a nurse will probably listen to the baby’s heart from time to time.
What about your water bag? It’s better to break it or not? And what about eating and drinking? Remember to ask your doctor about all these things.

After childbirth, the nurses and the hospital’s employees will teach you all about taking care of yourself and your baby, all about breastfeeding and hygiene.
Also, you may consider a group support where people experiencing what you’ve just been through really open themselves and speak freely about their experiences.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009
Hypnotherapy has been practiced since ancient times, however, only in modern times has it become accepted as a tool for optimal health and wellness. But what is it and how can it help you?
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is merely a way to relax the body and mind using guided imagery and visualization. It’s a natural state you’ve experienced thousands of times before such as during a daydream or right before you fall asleep at night.
Is there science behind hypnosis?
Yes, hypnosis is based on scientific principles. There is nothing mysterious about it. Your brain produces different wave patterns when you’re awake, relaxed, dreaming or in a deep sleep. When you’re relaxed or dreaming, your subconscious is open to learning. Everything you’ve experienced or learned in your life is stored in the subconscious, like driving your car, for instance. That’s why you can drive without thinking about it.
How can I benefit from hypnotherapy?
During hypnosis, you are accessing your subconscious, and since the subconscious is where you learn, it is also the place where you can change what you’ve learned or how you feel. Hypnosis can help you improve an athletic skill like your tennis game, change a negative behavior like overeating or smoking, reduce pain or stress, increase concentration, improve self-esteem or eliminate a fear or phobia.
How does hypnosis differ from meditation?

The brain waves during meditation and hypnosis are the same, however, in meditation, the objective is to completely quiet the mind. In hypnosis, the objective is to provide suggestions to activate change and cause a physiological response.

The word hypnosis never fails to conjure up images of something mysterious, shady or even downright occult in the minds of most of us. Be told the word hypnosis, and in your mind’s eye you may see the silhouette of a black-hatted man waving his pocket watch back and forth. That mysterious hypnotist figure popularized in cinema, comic strips and TV. Its not difficult to reason why most people come to doubt the efficacy or otherwise of hypnosis weight loss.

Though many people believe otherwise, its true that subjects under a hypnotic spell are not really enslaved by a master who can then seize control of their actions. They may appear passive and look like they are asleep to an onlooker but are actually in a very hyper attentive state. It is in this state of high alertness that they become extremely open to suggestion. This explains to a very large extent the effectiveness of hypnosis weight loss techniques.

Do you remember the last time you where so weary and lying in bed and you had that wonderful feeling of being overcome with comfort. You then wished it could remain that way for ever. Well, the truth is - a trained hypnotherapist can help you attain that state quite easily, with your cooperation, of course. It will then be possible for him to make you visualize yourself becoming healthier, happier, richer, more confident, a non smoker or whatever. So also during a hypnosis weight loss session, the therapist can induce in you the mindset you need to lose weight, control your food cravings, exercise regularly and so on.

The rationale behind medical hypnotherapy is that the mind and body are intimately interlinked and influencing one never fails to affect the other. If you suggest to the subconscious mind that the body is free of pain or disease, it will actually bring about that change. This is the reason why thousands around the world have experienced hypnosis weight loss who never thought they could.

There is a vast deal of evidence to support the idea of hypnosis weight loss. Thanks to the power of hypnotic suggestion, innumerable women have made it through childbirth sans the pain and discomfort. It has helped manage the pain of chemotherapy in countless cancer patients. And many ex patients credit their recovery to hypnotherapy alone. The success of hypnotherapy is undeniable and finally doctors today agree that hypnosis weight loss works.

Many people do not believe in hypnosis weight loss. And there are so many others who do not even believe that hypnosis is real. However, they do admit to having drifted off whilst thinking about a loved one, forgetting large chunks of a car journey (commonly known as highway hypnosis), or “going somewhere far away” while reading a book. These are examples of natural trance states. Hypnosis weight loss is about as harmless and without any damaging side effects as any one of those.

Ex smokers and drug addicts have sworn by it. It has consistently helped solve marital problems and rectify criminal behavior. Hypnosis has also been used successfully where lie detector tests have failed! And thousands have benefited from hypnosis weight loss too.

Smoking, drinking and over-eating (the leading cause of weight gain and obesity) are bad habits caused by a malformed or wrong mindset. Proper counseling or even better, hypnotherapy with the help of a trained hipnotherapist can help you to permanently change or erase such mindsets and help you change your life for good.

Birth Hypnosis

This week’s question

I am eight months’ pregnant and starting to get really worried about the birth. However, I’d like as natural a delivery as possible without drugs, so want to gather an arsenal of tools to help me cope mentally and physically. Can you suggest some natural methods to help me feel less frightened and help my body through the process?

The holistic GP

Millie Saha

I would suggest you talk this through with your partner, friends, doctor, midwife and, if you have one, doula. Knowledge is the key to remaining calm. Understanding what to expect in all eventualities will help you feel more empowered. Draw up a birth plan but always remember that you still have different options – medical and natural – should things change. I wanted an analgesic-free water birth but my daughter had other plans. She was delivered by elective Caesarean, two weeks overdue. But it was still a beautiful experience. Prenatal yoga classes help ground your energy and teach you how to use the breath to still the mind. Hypnobirthing techniques promote positive mental focus, and homeopathy is effective in all stages of childbirth. Giving birth in water eases painful contractions. Movement throughout a natural birth is also important in aiding gravity. Ultimately, have faith and remember that your amazing child is about to be born.

The hypnotherapist

Bonita Rayner-Jones

I see many clients who are frightened of childbirth. Hypnotherapy can turn fear into enjoyable expectation. It is an excellent tool for positive visualisation, and one that can help you have the birth you want. One technique to try is this: start by sitting comfortably or reclining, focusing on breathing in for five counts as if you are blowing up a balloon

in your stomach, then breathe out for seven counts. This will help you relax, then you can begin the positive visualisation of the birth from beginning to end, like a rehearsal in your mind. We often imagine what we don’t want and in return get what we don’t want. When we visualise a future event going badly, our mind perceives it as a fearful/dangerous event and this affects our body’s responses.

We’re like animals, in that our mind and body work to protect us. And so when we are scared, labour stalls or is prolonged to protect us from giving birth in a perceived dangerous environment. When we visualise positively, the body relaxes and does what it is made to do – using the muscles of the uterus to nudge the baby down. Labour is quicker and you feel more in control.

The naturopath

Susan Curtis

It is perfectly natural to be concerned about such a momentous event, especially if it is your first labour. Good preparation can really help both now and during the actual labour. You can start by drinking a cup of raspberry-leaf tea three times a day – clinical studies in Germany have shown that taking this regularly during the last three months of pregnancy can shorten labour and reduce complications. A homeopathic childbirth kit might be a good investment, too (from branches of Neal’s Yard Remedies). The kit contains gelsemium, which can help reduce anxiety before the birth, along with other remedies. A lower-back massage using diluted jasmine absolute can help during labour, particularly a long one. Mix some up in advance and have your partner on standby. You might also benefit from a couple of sessions with an experienced reflexologist or acupuncturist, as both could help reduce anxiety and prepare the body for childbirth.

10 things they don’t tell you about motherhood

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

There’s a conspiracy of silence about motherhood, argues our writer. From schoolgate gossips to bed-wetting, here is her guide for Mother’s Day

div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited { color:#06c; }

Motherhood is one of the great obsessions of our age. Everyone seems to have an opinion, even those who will never experience it (men), and those for whom it is a distant memory (grumpy old ladies). Whether you breast-feed or bottle-feed, give birth naturally or deliver by Caesarean, stay at home or return to work, the impression is that whatever you are doing, it’s almost certainly wrong.

The most curious aspect of this is that much of the pressure comes not from some patriarchal conspiracy, but from women. Even the National Childbirth Trust recently stated that it wants to see the use of epidurals during labour reduced by 40 per cent to “boost traditional births” - aka “agonising pain”.

Most confusing of all is what a friend of mine calls “the conspiracy of silence”: the abyss that exists between what people will tell you about having children and what it really entails. The truth is, as my mother once remarked darkly, that if women thought properly about having children, no one would ever give birth again.

Here then are ten things about motherhood that no one will tell you.

1. Bottoms
Motherhood, especially in the early years, is a scatological business. You will find yourself responsible for more dung than the keeper of the elephant enclosure at London Zoo. As a result, things that would once have made you gag are now mild inconveniences. At 3am, when your youngest, all snuggly next to you, covers your side of the bed in a wet, warm pool of wee, you don’t leap out and strip the sheets. Oh no: you stagger to the bathroom, grab a few towels, cover the wet patch and go back to sleep. You get to the stage when having “a little bit of wee, Mummy” on your trousers is normal. You will get used to sharing a lavatory cubicle with at least one other person, sometimes two or three on an outing. With a son you will, at some time, have to hold his willy when he goes to the loo.

2. Partners
You know those frazzled couples you used to see around at weekends? The ones who don’t appear to have washed or ironed their clothes? They call each other “Mummy” and “Daddy”, even though they once had names of their own. Their vocabulary now consists of a series of stock phrases: “You can’t have another Lego Star Wars Space Ship”; or “You can have an ice-cream, but only if you eat your broccoli.” Don’t get too cross with these couples. Remember, they’ve been up since 6am and they probably haven’t had sex for, ooh, about a thousand years. And crucially, one day that might be you.

3. Making a fool of yourself
It doesn’t matter how cool you are, once you have children you will snort like a piggy-wig, neigh like a horse, run through the park shouting “Here comes the wibble-monster”. Sometimes this can be liberating. Other times it’s just very, very embarrassing.

4. The body
Despite what the manuals tell you, pregnancy is not a return journey. Your back may go; your arches may fall; you will get brown spots on your skin. There may be whole areas of your body that you no longer recognise: Caesarians leave you with a weird stomach overhang; a natural birth means you will never again perform star jumps with confidence. Pilates, yoga, Power Plate. All these help. But unless you work at it like Madonna, you will never be box-fresh again.

5. The school gate
For some, an opportunity to display to the world their offspring’s brilliance. For others, a Dantesque vision of Hell. You’ll know which within seconds of your child’s first day at nursery.

6. Celebrity mothers
The only secret to the marvel of the celebrity mother, with her flat stomach, her 6in heels and her sexy husband, is this: 24-hour childcare. Don’t believe the hype.

7. Single friends
It can be hard, not to say very dull, for your childless friends when you turn into a milk-obsessed insomniac whose idea of spontaneity is giving her baby puréed avocado instead of banana for tea. Your friends’ obsession with the banal issues of life, such as whether to invest in this season’s new jump-suit, can seem absurdly indulgent. Besides, you are secretly jealous. Yet if you can both curb your tongue, a childless friend is often the best a mother can have - someone to talk to about the important issues in life; someone who will remind you that you once had an identity of your own and that there is more to life than school admission procedures.

8. Sleep
Unless you happen to be SAS trained, there is nothing that can prepare you for the effects of the prolonged sleep deprivation that comes with having children. They will wake you once, twice, three times in the night; if you have two, they will wake in relays, so as to inflict maximum damage. Should you attempt any sort of alcohol-based evening celebration, you can guarantee that the children will wake an hour and a half before they usually do, with twice the energy.

9 Birthing pools
If you like the idea of sitting in your own bodily fluids, then fine. If not, well, not. I know a man who had to perform an unpleasant fishing operation using the kitchen sieve during the later stages of his wife’s labour. He has never recovered.

10. The Fear
The most agonising aspect of motherhood is the terrible fear that you may lose your child. With the fear comes guilt, worry and, occasionally, panic. There is little you can do about this, except push it to the back of your mind, avoid listening to certain news reports - and pray that it never happens to you.

What we learnt the hard way

“No one explains to you how unnerving it is to be faced with this tiny replica of yourself, and all of your faults. I can be quite stubborn and argumentative and it’s shocking to deal with someone who’s absolutely the same. I say to my son, ‘you don’t have to win every argument’, but they drink in your example. I think he’s being unreasonable and then realise he is just doing exactly what I do!”
Diane Abbott, MP

“If only I’d realised that, no matter how hard I battled, I would lose control of my life. Before I had children I think I believed that, with a little discipline and organisation, I could be in charge. I couldn’t grasp that motherhood isn’t like that - you can’t schedule croup or projectile vomiting or a tantrum. You just have to go with it. I fought that randomness for a while, but I’ve admitted defeat.”
Mary Nightingale, newsreader

“No one told me how painful it is once you start breast-feeding. It’s like having two rocks on your chest and it hurts like hell. Midwives suggest Savoy cabbage - it stinks but it does work. So you’re sitting there with cold cabbage from the fridge flat on your chest to take away some of the pain. Having a baby is definitely not sexy, but you really don’t care.”
Alison Lapper, artist

“All moveable objects will never be where you think they are. I never know where my hairbrush is because someone’s taken it, there’s no Sellotape, the scissors are never where you normally keep them. At first I found it intensely irritating, but after a while you become quite sentimental about it all. Apart from those high-pitched screams - I’ve never got used to those.”
Daisy Waugh, writer

“The one thing that nobody explained to me was the lack of sleep. I was someone who liked a lie-in, so being up every two hours was certainly interesting. People said to me, in that mumsy whisper: ‘You have to try to sleep when the baby sleeps.’ But if I did that nothing would ever get done. When would you put a wash on, or eat, or have a cup of tea?”
Edith Bowman, DJ

“One minute you’re happy soaking in the bath, wondering what life would be like with three in the house rather than two, and before you know it you’re crawling around on all fours trying to entertain the new baby and dreams of soaking in a long, hot bath are just that - a dream.”
Ruth Kelly, MP

Hypnotherapy

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009
With the medical profession and the media both becoming more accepting and positive about the use of hypnotherapy, the treatment is gaining increased exposure and popularity as a treatment. If you’ve considered using hypnotherapy for yourself then you should first read this in-depth article where you’ll learn the background of hypnotherapy, what to expect and the risks entailed. Discover all this and more by reading on…

Okay, so some of you are familiar with hypnotherapy. You’ve heard it can be used for curing a number of ailments including stress, alcoholism and the like. But, if I were to ask, how many people do you know who’ve been treated by a hypnotherapist, it’s possible you may not recall any! Of course, you’d know those, who regularly visit a shrink or associations like the Alcoholics Anonymous. So, why don’t people make a beeline for hypnotherapy? To find out the answer to this question, and also about what hypnotherapy has to offer, just read on.

Hypnotism defined

Mention hypnotism and you’ll straightaway relate it to occult or magic, probably influenced by the famous magicians who manage to make whole buildings disappear right in front of your eyes! Despite these fantastic feats, hypnotism remains simply a method of bringing on an artificial state of sleep in the subject by the power of suggestion. That’s why the word hypnosis, derived from the Greek word hypnos, means sleep. It induces a state of reduced consciousness, where the subject remains awake, can talk and move, but becomes highly susceptible to suggestions.

The origin of hypnotism

Hypnotism is nothing new. It has always been a powerful tool of the occult. Witchdoctors and shamans have used it for thousands of years. However, the first use of hypnosis was in the seventeenth century and that too on animals. It was successfully used to calm chickens by balancing wood shavings on their beaks or tying their heads to the ground and drawing a line with chalk in front of their beaks. The French farmers even used it on hens to sit on eggs not their own!

The modern history of hypnotism is nothing but a seesaw battle between the believers and the skeptics. Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer applied this science to humans, though he termed it as magnetism. James Braid, a Scottish surgeon, introduced hypnotism as a modern day concept in 1843. Prior to Freud, this was the only known method of psychotherapy and was even used for performing major surgical operations, including amputations!

The power of hypnotherapy

Why hypnotherapy is preferred to other forms of healing is because it usually speeds up the therapeutic process. What might take months or years of regular psychotherapy can usually be accomplished within weeks with this therapy.

Hypnotherapy is effective in curing addictions, phobias, stress, anxiety and insomnia. It has been used for providing motivation, and building self-confidence and self-esteem. It has even come to the aid of those wanting to lose weight, stop smoking, become a better public speaker and overcome fear of heights.

However, hypnotherapy is no magic. And it certainly can’t make you a superhero! For example, it can’t make you run a cross-country out of the blue, unless you are already a runner. But to a cross-country runner it can give a psychological edge that may make a difference between a gold and a bronze medal. Hypnosis can be likened to a tool, like a knife. You don’t expect a knife to cut vegetables for you. But its availability makes it a whole lot easier to cut them the way you desire, rather than using your own hands! So, in other words, hypnosis is the tool that a hypnotherapist wields in curing your ailments.

This brings us to the important issue of selecting the right hypnotherapist.

Selecting a hypnotherapist

A hypnotherapist is a person who induces hypnotic state in you. Now, this sounds dicey, because, once hypnotized, you may come under his will and bidding. It’s this feeling of vulnerability, which discourages most from preferring this kind of therapy. And that’s probably why people don’t usually make a beeline for a hypnotherapist! However, the answer to the question, “Can I be made to do things against my will?” will come a little later in this article.

So, what’s the method of selection? Well, there’s no foolproof method of selecting the right hypnotherapist any more than there is a guaranteed way to select the right physician, lawyer, accountant or a mechanic! However, reputation counts and you may get to know of good hypnotherapists from your personal physician, family or friends, workplace or the Yellow Pages. You can also get hold of a list of professional associations or go through the International Registry of Professional Hypnotherapists.

However, whether the recommended hypnotherapists measure up to your requirement will depend entirely upon you. Their suitability depends upon various factors like personality, ideology (that may affect a good rapport), and also the nature of your problem. Although the best indication of a good professional is his satisfied clients, in this case, this isn’t so, because of the highly personalized nature of this therapy. That’s why someone’s recommended hypnotherapist may not, at times, turn out to be good enough for you.

So, what’re you to do? There’re a number ways in which you can choose a good hypnotherapist. In your first meeting have a long chat to find out your comfort level with him. Answer questions like: Do I feel welcome and accepted? Does their nearness give me pleasant vibes? Does their office feel like a haven? Do they seem knowledgeable enough? Are they genuinely interested in my problems and me? Do they ask a lot about me and really listen? Do they appear hopeful?

You may also need to find out about his background, professional qualifications, years in practice and experience with your kind of problem. In addition:

-Find out if your problem can be treated without hypnosis. -Be clear about the hypnotherapy procedure. Will hypnosis be physically induced or help of audiotapes be taken. -Know if personalized service, tailored to your needs, will be provided. Settle for nothing less. -Ask if someone can accompany you for the session. Genuine hypnotherapists would be delighted to find a friend or relative with you. -Find out if the session can be tape-recorded. Well-meaning hypnotherapists would let you do it for later use at home, as reinforcement. -Ask for references and memberships in hypnotherapy associations. -Know whether self-hypnosis will be taught. Hypnotherapists with your interests at heart will automatically do so to help you become self-reliant. -Find out about the fee structure, but don’t be overly concerned with the per session fee. If you’re able get cured in the appropriate number of sessions, a high fee would seem like a bargain!

However, don’t be overly concerned about the time or the number of sessions your problem may take, as there are far too many variables. Also, don’t ask about the success rate, as this is no indication for your chances of success.

The methods employed by hypnotherapists

A hypnotherapist has a choice of a number of techniques for hypnotic induction. The six main induction categories are:

    a. Eye fixation or fixed gaze method: As the name implies, in this method the subject is required to gaze at a spinning disc, or some such thing, to get into a trance. However, it’s not a very successful method as most subjects fail to respond to it. b. Progressive relaxation and imagery method: This involves having the subject imagine being in a safe or peaceful place, and then awakening him or her to full consciousness. c. Mental confusion method: This is designed to confuse the conscious mind, so that it simply becomes easier to just relax the mind and make it ‘let go’ into hypnosis. d. Mental misdirection method: This employs active use of the imagination, coupled with response, to hypnotize through responding to suggestions. e. Loss of equilibrium method: This makes use of gentle rocking to get the subject into a trance. f. Shock to nervous system method: This employs a sudden emphatic command given in a surprising manner. The subject experiences a moment of passivity during which he’ll either resist the trance, or let go and drop quickly into hypnosis.

Hypnotherapists may combine two or more methods to achieve the desired results. The combinations of methods may be as limitless as the imagination of those employing them!

What to expect in hypnotherapy

To find out how it feels to be under the sway of a hypnotherapist, let’s see how a hypnotherapy session is conducted:

-First, the hypnotherapist will discuss in detail the problems afflicting you to determine the nature of your problem. -Next, he will explain the process to ease your anxiety and prepare you for hypnosis. -This done, he will guide you through some exercises to determine the degree of physical and emotional suggestibility to gauge your threshold to suggestions. -After this, he will put you into a hypnotic state by using individualized methods and techniques. -As you begin to slip into the hypnotic trance, your body will relax and your mind will detach from everyday concerns and responsibilities. This’ll be accompanied by increased muscle relaxation, a feeling of well being, increased threshold to pain and diminished ability to vocalize. -Now, the hypnotherapist will apply his power of suggestion, telling you to focus on things you’d like to change. He’ll then proceed to show you the way to achieve those changes. You may have flashbacks of stressful memories and you may become almost childlike in accepting ideas or suggestions about yourself.

So, when’ll you start noticing the changes? It depends upon the intensity of your session or the number of times you’re made to listen to your audiotape, which can be for up to a month. You’ll begin noticing behavioral changes spontaneously popping into your conscious mind almost immediately. Your subconscious mind will help you out of your old patterns with these cues.

The risks of hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is not dangerous and, till date, no one has been seriously hurt (except some in the region of the pocket because of unscrupulous hypnotherapists!). Even the Council of Mental Health of the American Medical Association has approved hypnosis as a safe practice with no harmful side effects. The reason is the great resilience of our subconscious that always has our best interest as its main concern. The only danger is from ignorance and misconceptions about this procedure.

Coming to the most dreaded question, “Can I be made to do things against my will?” The answer is a resounding no! Most people develop these false beliefs by witnessing stage hypnosis performed by magicians, which is pure fun and entertainment. Under hypnosis, no one can make you do anything against your will or contrary to your value system. No one can make you unknowingly reveal your deepest secrets either. People are also known to tell lies under hypnosis, and that’s why, the court of law doesn’t admit testimony under hypnosis!

Some people fear that hypnosis may weaken their will and make them dependent on the hypnotherapist. Nothing can be further from the truth. Hypnosis is, in fact, a tool to gain more self-control, and can actually help improve one’s focus in life!

What if you don’t wake up? There isn’t a single case where someone has refused to rise and shine after the session. Hypnosis, as explained earlier, is akin to falling asleep and you get up, as if you’ve awakened after a nice long nap.

So, for those in dire need of help and wanting to try out something different, hypnotherapy may come as a shot in the arm. It’s quick, it’s safe and it’s effective.

Mom Says Hypnosis Helped With Daughters’ Births

More women are turning to hypnosis as a tool during childbirth, with the thought that preparing the mind can east the pain of labor. Hypnosis for Childbirth and helped Holly Leone, of Wolcott, get through two births without pain medication.”The philosophy is that birth is not a medical incident, it doesn’t have to hurt,Women love to tell war stories … fear is what creates pain in childbirth.

“I was just lying in bed, contractions were coming, I had tapes on,” Leone said. “The surges come and go, state of relaxation, and then it goes.”She said after her daughters were born she was left feeling happy and relaxed.Leone said instead of a war story, hypnosis left her with a picture-perfect birthing story to tell. hypnosis can also be used for mothers who aren’t considering natural childbirth. She said it can help east the discomfort of labor or a c-section.

Pregnancy, Labour and the Benefits of Hypnosis

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Imagine feeling empowered to expect and experience a positive calm pregnancy and birthing . How good would that feel?

Right from the beginning you can learn how to feel in mental and physical harmony with your body and the new inhabitant/s. You can feel calm, positive and generate your own natural pain relief processes, all of which reduce fear. This creates a positive expectation of a natural, relaxed and rewarding birth experience for you and your baby.

How can this happen? - Through hypnosis.
All hypnosis is self hypnosis, it is a natural attribute that you have always had and used. And this is a great time to learn more about it and harness the power of your mind to believe that your pregnancy and birthing process will be a comfortable and joyful event.

On the occasions when helpful intervention is required, the mothers who had learnt self hypnosis have reported feeling calmer and more confident. They also required less medication and feeling relaxed and well after delivery.

Your mind wants to do this for your body. Hypnosis increases your minds awareness of its ability because you learn about the process and you give yourself permission to enjoy all the extra benefits.

Where can you find out more?
Search the internet for courses on using hypnosis in pregnancy and labour. There are many wonderful hypnotherapists all over the country who have trained in hypnobirthing types of techniques. Usually they offer classes for you and your partner/labour supporting partner. These are of several weeks duration. These also open an opportunity of adding a new caring group of supportive friends to benefit the lives of you both and your baby.

If you attend a ‘hypnosis for pregnancy and birth’ class, you will expect to cover;

  • Learning how the mind body connection works and how to tune into it to achieve maximum benefit from the power of your own mind.
  • Strategies to help you gain optimal health in pregnancy for you and your baby.
  • Self-hypnosis techniques.
  • Hypnotic pain and fear reducing techniques.
  • Strategies to create a calm, confident birthing process and post hypnotic suggestions healing and health after delivery.

Your birthing partner will be a welcome support at this time. They are important and want to be the closest part of your support team at this time.

Acquire and use hypnobirthing Cds. These are also available on the internet and in some good book stores. All hypnosis CDs/tapes are best used with head phones as this keeps out external noise.

What can you expect from the benefits of hypnosis in childbirth?

  • Feeling positive and calm from the start.
  • You will need fewer/lower amounts of drugs or may require no drugs at all. This will mean lower risk of side effects to mother and baby.
  • Labour is shorter as the birthing muscles feel more comfortable, and you will feel calm so that the body can just do its perfect work for you.
  • You will feel more awake and energized because you will be experiencing the profound relaxation of hypnosis through out. (Hypnosis is a state of mind, not closed eyelids and inactive recumbent positions.)
  • If the need for interventions or complications arise, you will feel able to cope.
  • A baby who will be a better sleeper, more content and healthy feeder, as he/she has had a stress and drug reduced/free birth.

Hypnosis, the subconscious and behavior modification

Hypnosis Motivation Institute, hypnotherapy session

Do you remember when you learned how to drive a car? Wasn’t’ it confusing? Mind-boggling? Remember the number of things you had to think of and be aware of…the rear-view mirror, the clutch, the brake, the road, the side mirror, traffic all around you, the dashboard indicators, and so on.

At the beginning driving seemed difficult…almost impossible…a multi-task nightmare…and even if it didn’t…it certainly took all of your attention. But with practice and repetition driving soon became one of the many things you did without thinking or paying attention to exactly how it was done or what you were doing.

With practice and repetition, driving became ingrained in your subconscious mind and like so many other daily activities…driving became a learned behavior that no longer required thought. Driving became effortless…mindless…it became an automatic behavior…part of your subconscious programing.

It’s interesting and instructive to note that our autonomic system is in the subconscious. That’s the system which tells our hearts to beat and our lungs to breathe. It’s because of this we don’t have to think , “Oops! Gotta take a breath now!” or “Time for another heart beat!” We never have to remind ourselves of these things…it’s all taken care of automatically by our subconscious.

The subconscious functions to protect us and to make our day to day life easier…more automatic…once learned we never have to learn again. It’s our subconscious programing that  enables us to act instinctively and without thought as we go about the tasks of our day to day lives.

But as necessary as the subconscious is to our lives…subconscious habits and behaviors are based on programming from the past that may no longer serve our current needs and can be the source of much confusion and emotional pain.

Our subconscious mind holds habits and beliefs..both positive and negative…that automatically direct our lives and establish the limits of what we can or can’t achieve.

Generally speaking, if the conscious and the subconscious mind are in conflict…the dominate one wins out over the weaker…instincts win out over conscious will…emotions win out over logic and intellect…our subconscious programing wins out over our conscious efforts to change…to do more…to do better.

But change is possible…

The negative subconscious programing that holds us back from achieving our conscious desires can be re-written and doing so can change your life.

Your subconscious can be your greatest ally in your quest for success and self-improvement.

In the relaxed hypnotic state, the doorway between the conscious and the subconscious is open and new information is easily taken in. You are not thinking…you are experiencing. The subconscious doesn’t “think” in the usual way…it experiences….it reacts and it can’t distinguish between reality and unreality. Without the questions, direction, critical judgments or analysis by the conscious mind the subconscious absorbs all the information received through the senses as true.

During a hypnotherapy session, the  hypnotherapist communicates your conscious desires directly to your subconscious mind….making it quick and easy for the you to change lifelong habits and beliefs that no longer serve the your best interests.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a consensual state of heightened focused awareness and concentration combined with deep physical relaxation allowing access to the subconscious mind.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a technique that uses hypnosis to access the subconscious mind and deeper aspects of the brain, namely the hypothalamus, the medulla oblongata, and the corpus callosum. It is in these areas of the brain that  emotions, memory, and instincts lie…all the habits and motivations we are ordinarily unaware of.

Hypnosis is a state of focused awareness and hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for a specific therapeutic goal such as weight loss hypnosis, smoking cessation, exam hypnosis, hypnobirthing, improved academic or athletic performance, as well as the removal of emotional and psychological blocks.

Hypnosis provides access to the subconscious so that the desired therapeutic goals are achieved quickly and directly. The power of hypnosis combined with therapy can create rapid change, more so than traditional therapies, and help you achieve your self improvement goals

What is a hypnotherapist?

“Hypnotherapist…induces hypnotic state in client to increase motivation or alter behavior pattern through hypnosis.  Consults with client to determine the nature of problem.  Prepares client to enter hypnotic states by explaining how hypnosis works and what client will experience.  Tests subject to determine degrees of physical and emotional suggestibility.  Induces hypnotic state in client using individualized methods and techniques of hypnosis based on interpretation of test results and analysis of client’s problem.  May train client in self-hypnosis.” U.S. Department of Labor Directory of Occupational Titles. Quit Smoking With Hypnosis

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

If you really want to stop smoking, there are a variety of ways to succeed in your goal. Behavior modification, prescription medication, nicotine gum and patches to gradually cut down the amount you smoke, and support groups provide much-needed assistance to eliminate the killer drug, nicotine. You can even quit smoking “cold turkey” if you are certain you can do this. Many soon-to-be ex-smokers choose the path of hypnosis to help you quit smoking. For many, this treatment is entirely successful, but for others, it is not helpful. You will only know if hypnosis can help you quit smoking if you try it.

What is Hypnosis and How Can it Help Me to Quit Smoking?

There are many completely untrue urban legends about hypnosis. Contrary to these legends, hypnosis will not make you quack like a duck whenever you hear a bell ring. This is Hollywood silliness. Hypnosis will not “make” you do anything. You will still have complete control of what you do and don’t do.

Hypnosis is simply a form of deep relaxation. In this state, you can recall incidents that your conscious mind has blocked. It’s a useful tool by law enforcement agents to help a witness to a crime recall a car’s license plate, for example. It is also useful in changing unwanted behavior, such as smoking, over-eating, and excessive alcohol use. When you are in a hypnotic state, you are more accepting of suggestions. Hypnosis to quit smoking works for you when a psychologist who is credentialed to perform hypnosis implants the suggestion that you can quit smoking anytime you wish. You don’t need cigarettes. You are strong enough to beat this addiction. You will succeed in your goal.

Using hypnosis to quit smoking is a pleasant relaxing experience. Your practitioner will slowly induce a deep relaxed state, make suggestions about not smoking, and will bring you back to full awareness feeling refreshed and confident. Keep in mind that hypnosis to quit smoking is based upon a suggestion to your subconscious mind. If you want to smoke, you can. The hypnotic suggestion is just that – a suggestion. You are in control of your choices.

Some qualified psychologists believe that one way to use hypnosis to quit smoking is to implant the suggestion that tobacco tastes absolutely horrible; one puff, and you’ll crush that pipe, cigar or cigarette into garbage. This is called “aversion therapy;” it works by making the targeted behavior, such as smoking, so subconsciously unpleasant that you will avoid the behavior.

You have nothing to lose and perhaps much to gain by trying hypnosis to quit smoking.
